PostPosted: Mon Dec 01, 2014 7:06 pm    Post subject: Engine Tin Opinions/Suggestions Reply with quote

Ok, I've hinted to this question before, so now I'll just come out and ask. My engine was missing most of the tins when I purchased it. It only had the doghouse and jug/head tins...that's it...When I hinted at this before, a lot of people suggested that I stay away from the aftermarket tins because they were cheap, didn't fit correctly, etc..so I posted a WTB on the classifieds and had a couple come forth and said they could get me everything (OEM) that I was missing. I figure for OEM parts, even though 40 years old, the price was reasonable, so I chose one seller and made the purchase. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing the seller in any way, it's obvious that my definition of good condition and his definition of good condition are two totally different things. Anyhow, I received the tins today and to my surprise, they weren't what I expected..there are a few that I can definitely use, but others are utter junk. Either cracked, bolt holes ripped off, etc. To some, they may all be salvageable, but to me, only a few are. Lesson learned, ask more questions from the seller. Again, I'm not bashing him at all...the transaction was pleasant, fast shipping and I'm sure he thought he was doing me a favor...

Like I said, some of these can and will be salvaged. I've got all kind of elbow grease. But the ones that are cracked, missing bolt holes, ripped, etc, to me, it's not worth the effort to braze/weld them and try to patch what's missing. And I really don't want to chance purchasing the tins from the classifieds again. So, with that said, if you really had to purchase aftermarket tins, who would you purchase from? From the pics on various vendor sites, they all look the same to me. I'm eyeing the ones on CIP1.com, but I can't tell if they're any better than the ones on any other site.....

As always, your input is appreciated....

This is why I always look for good tin in the swap meets. Most time the stuff is rusted and damaged, but if you are not in a rush, you can find good stuff.

From what I've seen, I believe most of all the new tin is made by EMPI. And you're right, it sucks. I looked for some good sleed tin and struck out and bought the sled tins from CIP-1. It was EMPI and I had to do a lot of heavy alterations to make it fit.

It's kind of amazing that they can spend big $ to tool up to stamp these tin pieces but can't get it right?

I was also looking for some good D/P cylinder tin. The classifieds here were thin and what was listed was junk.. I looked around at all the bone yards around the PHX area and was told most of the original tin is "drying up".

A suggestion, list some WTB adds and let them know your looking for good tin. If they respond to your ad, ask for lots of pictures.. In most cases, it's rare to find tin anymore w/out ripped mounting holes.

Thank you for your input and suggestions...one more question...I'm pretty sure I've identified my engine as a type 3 base on the number stamped on top of the engine block.

Am I wrong to assume the Type 1 tins will fit? Reason I ask is because I took one of the tins that I received, the behind the pulley tin which is in good shape, and there is no way for it to fit properly because of the position of the dip stick tube. I removed the dip stick tube and the tin fit perfectly, however, there is no way it will fit with the dip stick tube installed. The cut-out in the tin is nowhere close to the position of the tube. The dip stick isn't bent or anything, so I'assuming it's position must differ from a Type 1....does that make sense?

Before I go out and buy more tins, I need to know what will work and won't..... Sad

Wonder if anybody has used one of these to convert the type 3 to type 1?

Well, you can ignore most of the previous reply. Looks like my engine has already been retrofitted for the type 1 dipstick. Guess my only choice will be to modify the behind the pulley tin......any other suggestions...?

Sorry for the dirty block, it's getting cleaned a little at a time...did clean the dipstick tube before I took a pic though.... Smile

I bought everything but the shroud and the upper cylinder tin from socal and it all fit good with no gaps. You can see where they made the design more cost effective with the die/stamp but the end product serves it's purpose well. With the shroud I would go out of my way for OG but that is it.

People who you give money to without receiving what was in agreement are not doing you a favor.

I would suggest reducing the size of the pictures before posting them. They take a long time to load and not everyone has fast enough internet.

You should upload them to the Gallery, that way they won't be deleted which will make this topic worthless.

As far as finding good tin you might try awesomepowdercoat.com , they seem to have a good product.

if you want original German tin from a reputable vendor, give Airhead Parts in CA a call, they bought out a huge VW yard of used parts a year or two ago, and have a huge assortment of OG German anything. If you know specifically what pieces you need they can probably help.
Also, Bug City in CT has a lot of Used Tin. I just had a turnkey built and I sourced most of my tin through them, used. Then I sandblasted it and powedercoated it. Everything I got from them was in good shape, no tears cracks, etc. Just good, used tin. They also have alot of OEM VW seals, like for the doghouse tin, oil coller, etc. It all went together perfect. The price there is always steeper than the competition and/or the swap meets, but it is there if you need it.
