if its off by 1 tooth, it shouldnt matter as long as you are at tdc and pointing at number 1. |

The bounce you see on the timing mark is related to mechanical inaccuracies with the present system. Crank fire is more accurate. You could have worn out parts also. |

X2. You need a more accurate distributor. Find a german 009 or as a seco dary a brazil unit. They seem to do best as far as 009s go. Or as mentioned, crankfire is an accurate system. _________________ 2276 IDA's 86C 11-1 DD !

It is possible that the dist drive wasn't shimmed correctly to mesh with the bronze crank gear.
Excessive lash will cause spark bounce...
That is why I install the distributor drive / distributor in the case half and adjust it as needed before I assemble the case halves.
If you install the drive after the case is assembled... Well, you myswell go buy a gerbil and put it in yer pocket. |

does anyone know the spec for how much play the drive gear should have? I've read .020" for the up/down movement but what about backlash? _________________ 71 Super - Backroad Thrasher

Put motor at TDC, remove distributor and look at where the gear position is. If I remember correct it should be from left to right on the side closest to front of car. It doesnt' matter if it is off unless you have a distributor with the 3rd cylinder retard. Just check your timing and make sure at TDC the rotor is at the correct cylinder on the distributor. |

It is probably fine. What type of timing light do you use? I have an old craftsman that does that, jumping thing. Time it with a regular bulb so you know it is right then check with timing light. Is it running weird? |

I purchased the super dupper "pro" digital advance light and it is a piece of junk with a points distributor. Timing shown jumps all over the place when reved. I use my simple Sears light with a dial and timing is ( within reason )rock steady. _________________ DDC racing |

I read that the little spring that goes in the center of the drive prevents timing from jumping around. _________________ "A petrol engine can start readily, run smoothly and give every appearance of being in good order, without necessarily being in good tune." - Colin Campbell, "The Sportscar Engine" |

It doesn't really matter what way the drive is in as long as your distributor is turned right. With some distributors you can only turn them so far before they hit something. The CB Magnaspark can turn all the way around UNLESS you have certain stock fuel pumps or it hits the carb linkage. _________________ 71 Super - Backroad Thrasher

Remove the distributor.... Remove the little spring.....
Take a large screwdriver and engage the slot in the top of the drive.
Rock the drive back and forth...
If it has any more than a slight clearance in the gear mesh.... It is excessive.
You want just enough clearance for oil to lubricate it.
Re-doing it with the engine assembled is a pain in the ass, but can be done.
There is a sale on Gerbil food right now... |
