I am using the standard bosch 4 prong relays. I've got 12v coming from the battery going to "30". "85" is grounded. "86" is a 12v switched source, and "87" goes to the headlights. the 12v to "30" should have a fuse, less than the relay is rated to, right? Then should the relay be placed before or after the fuse block for the headlights, or does it matter, as long as there is a fuse on either the "86" or the "87"? I've looked at a bunch of posts and cannot find what I am looking for,

I'm sorry if this is confusing, this is my first time playing with relays. Ive done a bunch of electrical work, just never relays
Thanks
Andrew

Fuse should be between 12v source (fuse block) and terminal 30 of relay....

In image below just replace "fan" and "t-stat" with "lights" and "light switch"... Use upper part of diagram...

Usually in a case where the control circuit (switch), to operate relay can be powered off same fused circuit that supplies instrument lighting...

If I use a 5 prong relay like Manxdavid posted, I can do away with the individual 4 prong relays for high and low beans, right?

If you have the turn signal lever with the hi beam switch in the handle then this relay is the way to go.
I found one on theSamba for about 15 bucks shipped and it cleaned up my wiring nicely.

Yeah, Ive got the 66 style switch with the high beam switch in the turn signal. I'm glad I asked my question because I almost did something really silly with my wiring.
Thanks for the help!

Note how early VW relay is wired... This is just one version of relay (early / 311-941-583a))...

This diagram was for absolute minimal lamp wiring for sand rail....
