This brings me to another question. What exactly does putting in an aftermarket shifter do? Shorter travel, smoother, what?

Shorter, more positive throws. A better lockout/engagement mechanism for reverse (either a button such as used in the T-handle shifters, a hoop to pull in the Hurst style shifters, or a handle to pull in the Berg style shifters). Far less flex in the shifter shaft. The stock shifter feels like a wet noodle, IMO. Laughing

Would you like something like this?

Not my best photo, sorry:

I have the gear lever. Now all I have to do is to build the car around it.

I think I would, that looks really nice!

The only reason I like the ball shape is because I can all wrap my fingers around it.

I do think I would fancy that style. I suppose I'll check my local hobby shop and see what that have, as opposed to making mine one of a nice wood for now. It will be an easier route.

- a question for any wood guys out there- how does one achieve the "tiger stripe" look in the wood? I've read that they used to soak a length of rope in kerosine wrap it around and then light it. I was wanting to do this in a swirl around it.

I suppose I should change the name of this thread to "show is your shifters"

I would think that if you are starting with bare (unfinished) wood a regular dark stain on a pattern you like should do the trick. If the knob is already finished you will have to sand it and get it to bare wood for it to accept the dark stain. Finish with clear poly finish.

3-D printing, perhaps?

Nicholas may be the expert to ask. It may not be wood, but perhaps the colours could perhaps be added during the printing, in layers to give the effect of wood.

A very interesting idea. 3D printing is really impressive stuff wish I had one to play with!

I'll try to find, and pm this Nicholas fella to see what he says about the idea.

I tried the kerosine stripes, it worked well. But while trying to coat it, I droped it in the dirt Confused So Then I sprayed it off with water and tried to burn the rest of the coating off, because it's just a scrap piece of wood. So I sanded and tried my hand at staining and coating it in urethane, didn't really know what to do because the label isn't that legible, I i just kind of dipped it in there. It came out pretty slick, am I supposed to do two Coates?

Laughing Lol me either, I'm just trying to figure out how this stuff all works. I have little experience with wood, the only other thing I've made out of the stuff is a ring for my gf which I'm rather proud of.

Hopefully I can go to the craft store tomorrow..to look for balls... Wink

Try a black golf ball. All you have to do is drill a hole and epoxy it in place. Feels good on the hand too.

I suppose it's one of many. Sure wish I had one, they're one of the better looking new cars on the line today.

"Don't knock it till you try it" I guess. It's not too bad, i wish it were alittle bigger though. Don't think its my cup of tea. Nothing to Lose though, just found some random old golf ball to drill and tap.

Interesting thread Very Happy

Here's another idea for you: Exactly scaled up original shift knob on a Gene Berg Shifter, made from aluminum and powder coated to exact color ==> Extremly precise and lockable:
