BN4 Eberspacher Restoration and installation - 72-78

Now that Im for the most part settled into my new home, have gone through and sold 95% of my early BN4 heater stuff - I now have a place to work and space to do it in.

Its been 2.5 years since I had all my stuff in one place at one time - tools and toys Wink

With that Ive dived into all things Heater that I have. For one I have to much and two by selling some off gives me space to do what I want - restore later BN4s for my 74 Westfalia project.

Some may remember my brief visit to San Diego back in January of 2011? While there I swung into Interstate VW and scored a nice BN4 out of a 74 - of which I started restoring the system in San Antonio?

Well I plan to break this out of its box and finish it with a bench test. Along with the one up top Im going to restore this one below - but in Orange Cool

Same thing - make it all snazzy and bench test it.

I made the wooden stand for testing, I plan to have some good bench test vids done - for the idiot in us all. Once I get through that - I plan on doing all the install pics and vid stuff for the Orange one into the 74 Westfalia. As close to factory as possible.

Should be fun. I may not have the time weekly to post new stuff but Ill try!

Starting off with a decent looking - all parts there unit. It is dirty - but all that will change.

So I plugged the unrestored unit in today and gave her a run. All systems look like a go but the metering pump Crying or Very sad

The pump on it is good - as you will see in the second vid Wink

I wanted to run this unrestored one first to see if worked. What do you think might be wrong? Im voting for the points in the fan. Im not going to know that till I blow it apart - clean it them put it back together.

Then we have the unit you see at the top of the post. I got this one from Interstate VW back in 2011. Its been cleaned and gone through - except the points on in the fan. But as you can see, runs great. Next will be to add fuel to the whole shanee nee!

Two nice things to report in progress. The above restored heater has been fueled up and runs great. Fires up in seconds and cools down quick.

Jumped into the second resto - this was a unit I had got from a VW swap meet last year. I took the fan apart, cleaned and lubed the points, back together clean and painted - just waiting for the paint to cure.

Excellent video I have had problems with my pump in my restore and am waiting to get one that is working ,but nice to actually see and hear what it should do great video

Thanks. There are a couple of Eberspacher vids on YouTube but none that kinda explains stuff for the idiot in all of us - I need it boiled down to simple terms Laughing

I watched a couple just to pick up on how to wire it up to bench test. Tomorrow I should have this together - once the paint has a chance to harden more. Then Ill test to see if it works.

Just for reference - here is a unrestored Orange Eberspacher. The colors are close (Rustoleum Safety Orange) next to og which I think is lighter with a touch more yellow.

Here is some more sexy BN4 Porno for you Eberspacher geeks. Was able to reassemble the restored BN4 - Orange Blossom - which now works and runs quieter than the Gray one. Vintage Heat for sure.

Its a "here is the baby" vid as opposed to "watch the birth" Laughing

I've got a bn4 to rebuild for my 71 crewcab so this will be good for reference. As I have discovered in the past on here the pipe work to feed the hot air is different for a pick up so I will need to find or make that Rolling Eyes
