Here we go then! been hanging round here awhile reading all the good stuff on this site. Woke up middle of night about a year ago, decided to check vehicle classifieds. Happened on a vw van, looked a bit more and was suddenly hooked. After about 6 months looking, one came up locally. Went to look at it, then spent the next 3 weeks pi****g around wondering whether i should buy her or not. I then happened across Sunnydog's blog, well if that ain't an ad for a VW i don't know what is!. Figured i could sure do with some memories like that, made the call and here she is. It was a tuesday, so i called her Ruby!.
My plan, as i really know nothing about VW's or car's in general, is to start with the engine. It has been sat for 10 yrs plus, so i would like to give that as much attention as i can before starting it. I'm basically going into this blind, but with a Bentley and hopefully some help from you guys. I'm going to be asking a lot of questions, possibly a lot of stupid questions, so please bear with me. My overall quest is to keep her as stock as i possibly can. The interior is in pretty good shape. The body needs a little work but to get it running is my main goal. Heres some

Ahhh, the chianti red Helsinki. That full width bed is a nice feature, and hey, it still has the rear bumper! I have yet to see a red 72 in my travels.

I love that interior layout. Giving me ideas for my impending interior build. Your bus looks like great shap other than that rust. Many memories to come I'm sure!

Thanks for the reply's, yeah i haven't seen too many with the lay out of this one.Engine already pulled. Took the heater out on advice of the po. Had a real fun time taking the screws out of the bottom of the firewall. Once the gas tank was removed, had a look inside and found only minimal rust. Going to give the tank the por 15 treatment i think. Checked the sender and readings seem good. Starting reading up on the Bentley on where to start with getting the engine up and running.

I plan to give the heater a once over before it gets re installed, rather not take any chances.

While waiting on some 'title' issues, it was best to just clean my newly acquired '72 Weekender (tintop if you prefer). This turned out to be an excellent way to determine the true condition of my bus. Numerous 'discoveries' were made. As well as the ability to get the vehicle to move, it was noted that it was equally important to insure that I could get the bus to stop! Needless to say, tens of hours and plenty of dollars later, the brake system has been replaced. That is an interesting color and interior layout. Ouch! on that rusty side panel; how's the frame and front beam? Too bad about the distance between us, stock '72 can be a tuff mark to shoot for. Still, shout out, I might have a part or two. That rocker panel rust is pretty common, especially up here. Nice to see another Alberta bus.

Nice 72! Cool interior! Tales a bunch of (clear and focused) live, replace the fuel lines, and go through the brakes, And you'll do great! Smile

Thanks for checking out the thread, been reading your guy's for a while now.
Here's where I'm at right now, looking for some advice on this one. When I bought the bus the engine was out of it, just removed by the po. He suggested replacing the rings as there was smoke coming from the engine, not 100% on that one. My question is should I get the engine back in and try getting it started, see what happens and then go from there? Or would the best approach be to start "looking into things" using the Bentley and Muir as a guide to see what may need replacing?

The stock 1700 pulls pretty well. I would put it back in and give it a go. It is really tough to evaluate without tearing it down, so the only downside is labour to pull/put back. Thats cheap in our world
