G'day all, I'm currently on my way to south america in my 79. I'm Costa Rica currently, and thought I might check to see if my ba6 was working before we went south and it gets cold.
Anyway, go to turn it on and nothing other than the circulation fan starts up. It worked way back in the states which was the last time I tries to turn it on.
I put some power straight to the pump and it did fire up so its not stuck.
I'm wondering if I have damaged it driving through some high water along the way.
Any thoughts would be very welcome as ive been poking around with it for a couple of days now and have been left scratching my head |

Start with a test light on the pump leads, one should have power as long as the heater is switched on (green wire IIRC) the other brown (with stripe) wire should show a pulsed ground (connect test light clamp to + to test for that). If you are getting the pulsed ground suspect a relay or dirty/loose terminal on the pump power circuit, if no pulsed ground the points in the combustion blower are dirty.

Thanks, has anyone got how I can get at the points on the fan? Pulled it apart but couldn't see how to get at the points.
The relay is working well but the multi pin plug that plugs into it was distorted slightly from heat around the thicker green wire.
I am leaning toward there being something wrong in the combustion fan as it has power to it but it doesn't work. |

Not if you have some basic mechanical skills, but if you regulary get frustrated and break stuff it's best you leave it be. This thread has a pictorial on the BN-4 unit which is very similar aside from how it's mounted: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=343313

A good, long Allen key was helpful when I did mine - for taking the fan off.

| thanks for the link, and don't worry i'm nothing but zen when taking things apart. i got it down to the point that the fan was off the end and the shroud was off and the end cap was removed but i cant actually get in at the motor itself and i don't seam to be able to get the thing to spin so i'm wondering if there is a problem with the actual motor of the fan or maybe i just keep hooking up the power to it wrong on the bench? |

Get the points wire by mistake and you'll get expensive smoke, if you aren't sure don't even try. There's wiring diagrams for BA-6 in the heaters and air conditioning section of the owners manuals section of the technical area. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/heater_ac.php

I put 12 volts to my ba6 fuel pump to get it ticking.
Short contact and it still runs flawlessly today!
My dual spark plug was bad and would never fire off.
New $$$
My safety switch was in need of a well placed smack in
The palm of my hand which miraculously got it to reset!
I have spare everything for this heater I bought parts when
They cameup for sale.
Soooo good luck. It's EZ to uninstall everything and
Put back together. I am not a mechanic I just act like
one when the westy needs me.
