The many shades of my Ghia.

I've been trying to decide since I got my Ghia what color I want to paint it. Everyone likes the friggin' blue color, so it will go back to the original shade - Olympic.

My question is about the roof/ two tone.

In 73 would my Ghia have had the option of two tone,from either the dealer or factory? Through my sanding it looks like it came with a white top, maybe it's just primer though? I've tried researching this and came up empty handed.

And yes, at one point my car looked like it was pretty in pink

You don't have to be in a hurry to decide. I found that the colours only "presented" themselves this weekend when I had:

carpets - ready
seat upholstery - done (two colours to take into account)
paint swatches - for a two-tone Ghia

I had about 6 or 7 sample sheets prepared by the paint guy. And yesterday my wife and I finally agreed on the scheme - ignoring the grandchildren's well-meaning but wildly colourful suggestions.

That Olympic Blue would look good with a navy or darker blue on the roof. (Depending on the interior: It would look good with red, or browns/tans, or black. Very versatile colour, blue.)

Non-US markets often still had the option of factory two-toned colors. Looking at this German '73 Ghia sales brochure from theSamba technical archives, the bottom chart shows that Olympia Blue was available with the Hellelfenbein (light ivory) or also black (Schwarz) roof-

If you want to get away from that "horrible" black interior, the chart shows that not only black was available as the vinyl color choice, but also Lederbeige (tan) or Palisander (chocolate brown).

As a suggestion, you could buy a 1:18 model of a Ghia Coupe and paint it with spray can paint similar to those two colors to see if you like the two-tone effect. This one already has the roof in ivory. http://www.amazon.com/Yat-Ming-Scale-Volkswagen-Karmann-Ghia/dp/B001LF3B9U

Personally the ivory/blue would be very suitable for a FL environment. If you decide to have the Ghia painted like that, pay attention to the paint split lines on the front and rear roof pillars- they are easy to get wrong.

So since my car is US market, it never came Two tone ? Just two shades of primer I guess - weird ?

I like the chocolate brown interior, that would make for a very handsome interior. I'm afraid however, that my girlfriend would kill me. I've joked for quite a while about a beige body, and some shade of brown top, Aswell as those other brownish interiors. She hates the idea! Perhaps I'll suprise her one day with a beige ghia.

I suppose that the cream and blue will look nice, I've found some pics online. If I don't like it I could always just paint the top again.

If you're not certain that you'll like the painted roof, I bet that you could get a vinyl stick-on one made by a company that makes those advertising wraps for vehicles.

Well when I prime it I'm going to have it tinted blue so I can see if I like the whole thing blue.
