|
|
Hello Vanagon world! I have just invaded
currently the owner of one 78 westfalia, and one 71 squareback, and dad has a 72 westfalia that I keep on the road.
reading through those threads, you may notice I have a tendency to knock on doors over a mossy car or three....
well, I did it again.
I found this:
day before yesterday, on the first, I was just wondering through our new neighborhood in Everett, and I stumbled across two 72 super beetles, a chevelle, and this vanagon! well, when the first two VW owners didn't open the door, I kept trying on the vanagon owners door, and got success!
After asking about her vanagon in the back yard, I asked her what her plans were for it. after a divorce in 2010, and the need for a new muffler, this poor van got parked! she said she wouldn't mind selling it, and I asked if she had a price range in mind at all. she didn't have a number or anything, but lets go take a look at the van!
so off to the back yard we go! (back alley more like...)
here is what we found..
leaves growing through the drivers door, which got left open a hair:
it looks like 55K original miles!
Automatic: (big plus, mom doesn't like to drive manuals)
mouse trails...
leading straight to the dead mouse....
gallons of bleach on the way soon...
which I will need for the mold
but the rest of the interior should clean up very nicely! the original canvas, with a replaced and incorrect pop top seal set...(pic on that later) with one major rip and a few other small ones...useable until summer when a project can be tackled....
unfortunately, she has lost the key, but has the title in her name, and lost that paper also, so we will be off to the DMV for a fresh one in my name soon I hope, waiting on that to make a key and do and fixing to it. should run with a jump start, but who really knows...I wont try my luck till its in my name for sure!
also, the slider was stuck shut when I took all these pictures, but I got it unstuck and soaked the rear hinge with Kriol and worked it MOSTLY free, but ill have to take it apart and lube it all up correctly and such soon. the rear hatch was locked, and without a key, no opening that! the hatch struts were bad too she said.
to get right to the heart of the matter, I climbed in through the front seat and got into the back for these pictures
took the passenger door handle off to have a key made, and have the vin handy just in case its needed. lock smith was gone for the holidays, so ill be bugging him tomorrow.
Plans for this one? if it runs and drives and I can put some miles on it and prove reliability, we will get Mr. sticky roadworthy and then sell him and this will become mom and dads new camper merry Christmas mom and dad!
I think I am forgetting the best part.
while we were climbing around in the camper, she said some of my favorite words....
"you know, I think I would be okay if you just wanted to take it. I mean, we were gonna donate it anyways, or just junk it, so if you want it, its yours."
yeah.
second free car I have scored in 2 weeks....but that is a whole nother story....
Looking forward to playing with this one

Nice find Stuart,
I have just decided to ask the lady in the neighbourhood what she plans to do with the old porche that has been sitting in her back yard for at least 15 years. (seriously) It is likely totally rusted by now but can't hurt to see what she says.
re your new vanagon... our first vanagon had pretty heavy mildew/growth on the inside of the pop-top butwe managed to get it looking almost like new.
mildew:
after some hours of scrubbing with water/bleach and dish soap:

best of luck with the new van and Happy 2015! _________________ 1991 Syncro Westfalia - Bostig Zetec

The other free one was an 87 camaro, v6 automatic, which i sold to dad, (who i still live with, so its only sold as in its in his name and i get money for it, i still get to fart arou.d with it.) and today i managed to land a 3rd free car, a late 80s early 90s ford explorer from a buddy whos family all have new cars and they never drive it. Going to loan out to a buddy in desprate need of wheels and then i will either sell to him or someone else to get some cashflow going to spend on my VWs.
And to think i have three more doors i want to knock on to ask about cars in the next couple days... two 72 superbugs, and a 70s chevelle...and that was just in a five block radius of my new house...lots more side alleys to wander!
Secretly hope to find a syncro this way.....and a splitty....im still allowed to dream right? _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Hey Stu,
Congratulations on your new 'finds'!!! If you really want a Syncro (yeah, like we can only imagine what kind of trouble you`d get yourself into, with one of those!!!), why don`t you give Kirk Meeks a call (@ NorthWesty), and discuss it. I`ve always wondered about the feasability of converting an early (air cooled) Vanagon---call him, and report back to me @ this upcoming Cascade Kombi meeting (this Tuesday, so get on it!!! )
And, Happy New Year SAMBAnistas!

Holy crap it runs!
That keyed hole in the third access panel is for filling the onboard water tank (I fill mine from the inside).
I know you already know this, but let me be the first to say change the fuel lines!
