|
|
I have a question regarding the correct pop out windows for an early 55 beetle US export...i understand after much reading that even though there are pop out quarter windows that fit from 64 down, there also is another type of pop out window with different frame style for up to early 55 I think...wider chrome frame more like split window bugs?? not 100% sure
any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
I understand prices for some range from a few hundred bucks all the way to thousands for the wider frames I think...hoping I can get away the less $$ type |

For the Smoothy style early, early 55, and sure you can go repop for about $2k shipped... Or you can really go off the deep end and find a set of originals in the $3-5k range when they surface... Even finding a set in poor shape in need of everything? You can absolutely forget about stumbling across a set for a few hundred bucks.. Originals beat to death are still going well over a grand. In fact I don't think I have ever seen an original set (or repops for that matter) ever come up here under the $1,500.00+ mark...
The newer ribbed '64 down style repops are pulling $400-$500 complete. Good used OEM are still fetching $200-$300 but usually with broken or missing hardware or other issues (in most cases anyway). But on occasion a ribbed set does surface on here cheap & complete but are usually sold in one day (some even within an hour). Before I got the set I have I checked here nearly everyday for almost 2 years and the nice, cheap complete ones sell faster than you can reply to the ad with only 5 views on it.
For me, I got really lucky with a set of original out of a '64 to put in my '57. In near perfect condition with perfect hardware & aluminum covers for $150 complete off Craigslist... The only cosmetic difference from an early set (55 up) to a newer set (63 down) are the logo sizes... other than that no one going down the road at 70mph is going to care what year their actually from... _________________ ::: Slowoval ::: LaDawri Sebring ::: '61 Creampuff ::: Dust Storm '66 ::: |

There are 2 styles of the "wide Aluminum frame" type.
There is the 1950-52 style that has no seal on the outter perimeter of the frame. Reproductions of this type are available for about $2k
The second style is 1953-55, and these have a seal around the perimeter of the frame. No reproductions of these yet.
Here's an original set 4-sale:

Besides the seal, the rear latches are very different between these 2 styles as well. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

hey thanks so much for the answers!!
they look so awesome...sounding like a "down the road" project at those prices and at how often you can find them
very cool to know the differences between the years like that too! |

I just went there and it looks like they only have a set for "up to 1952 split pop outs for $1,700.00"
cool site! if you know of any other sites like that for ovals please let me know
...one thing I saw was "Excellent repro , split , "2 leaves " bumper brackets" and I have always had a question about that. Were the og bumper brackets 3 pieces of metal or 2? I thought for some reason they were 3 on the back and have been told they were only 2 pieces of metal in the front? IDK, Maybe I'll make another topic about it...any help would be cool |

Ricardo's ad for early oval pop outs. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=802726
FWIW, agree with the earlier post, it's you car and your money, but your car doesn't currently have pop outs, so didn't leave the dealer that way - point often times cars were accessorized at later times, sporting later equipment - radios, popouts, etc. See no crime in sporting later popouts. |
