upon taking on building an engine, i ran into a lot of question about aftermarket cranks and the bearings to match. after much reading, i was more confused as the info sank in.
SRP had a bunch of posts on bearings, what ones went with what crank designs etc. after reading a thread, and starting one of my own:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=517737&highlight=center+centre+main+bearing
that's where steve came in. i PM'ed him about some bearings, he gave me his phone number and we had a really cool conversation about bearings, engines and life in general.
he milled up the bearings, but nicked one, just a tiny one, but felt the need to make another set. they came, perfectly packaged in a timley manner. then, like a tool, i droped one like a bar of soap, and put tiny nick in the bearing! poor guy made another set, just so i could ding it on my end.
he is a top notch guy that took the time to prevent engine failure for some guy on the other side of the country that he only knew because of the forums.
steve, you are a knowledgeable, honest guy and really have a grip on what is going on. anyone can assemble and engine, you are one of the few that can build them, and know the in's and out's
i feel that you saved my ass by catching the bearing/crank compatibility issue and for that, i thank you

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |

Also the fact that people are agreeing with Skills, it's a turn of events for samba history |

Just wanted to say Steve provided me with two sets of SilverLine Steel backed bearings (I have two builds going) with an Internal Groove he machined in. I did exactly what the OP did. I sent him a private message asking if he still worked on the bearings.
Was very pleasant to work with, even when USPS screwed up the check delivery.
I'll take pictures and post them later.
Thanks So much Steve! _________________ 1970 - Separated from the Pan again for a proper rebuild *fingers crossed* |
