Help Identifying a Broken Steering Column Bushing

I was replacing the turn signal switch on my '72 Super and this fell to pieces w/in the column. I couldn't identify it, but I guess it's a bushing of some kind, just not sure what to get as a replacement.

Thomas, I emailed the picture to WW and the guy who answered couldn't identify the part. What I can say is that after re-installing my turn and wiper switches and steering wheel, my steering lock no longer works. Is there an additional bushing or piece that works w/the steering lock that may be what busted?

You can see the busted piece/bushing in this picture - follow the red arrow.

I can confirm that it's what's missing now. It appears to go over the ribbed bushing you linked from WW's site.

Found a good picture of it on another post here, borrowing it to show. It's the yellowish item circled below, goes over the ribbed bushing and below the circlip.

Any ideas where I can get one?

Ive said it before and ill say it again. I don't think this spacer is actually necessary. I have one and have 0 up/down, left/right, or in out play. I am however running one of the newer WW upper bearings with the plastic contact ring. I placed it with the plastic ring facing inwards so that it didn't work itself up and loose.

I dont have one of those spacers and to date have 0 issues.

So your saying VW included a part in the steering column for no reason? Must have been the same engineer who included all those cooling tins that aren't really needed. Very Happy

I battled this issue a few months back on my 74 Standard Bug (my thread is referenced above). Some say that they have no issues NOT having that spacer in their steering column, but with mine it was an issue, with too much in/out (meaning towards and away from the driver position) play on the steering column.
Here's the diagram:

1A in the diagram above is the anti-rattle bushing, which is easily sourced on-line, some are plastic and some are metal.

1 in the diagram above, is a plastic spacer that helps to hold the anti-rattle bushing in place, Item 1 goes above the anti-rattle bushing and then a C clip holds it in place. Without (item 1) it on my Bug the steering has way too much play in/out play and the anti-rattle bushing would work itself loose causing even more play in the steering.

As far as I'm aware, 1 is not available to purchase, so I had to improvise. I used some plastic pipe cut to the correct length to use as a replacement spacer (see my thread above). Once that was installed, the anti-rattle bushing stayed in place and the in/out play was gone.

Now mines a 74 Standard Bug and I needed part 1, but for later Bugs (74 1/2 and up ) I think you need the later spacer which is 1B, you might also need spacer 1 as well (I can't confirm since mine's a 74 Standard Bug)

My understanding is that 1A and 1B are for the '74 on cars and are to be used together. 1 is for the earlier cars (without 1A). I wonder if 1A+1B can be used on pre-74 cars?
