I have a beetle (1975) and my drivers side door has serious issues. I know that it is not the original door because the original color of the car is yellow (been painted orange) and the passenger side door is yellow on the inside under the panel, but the drivers side door is blue on the inside under the panel. Now here is my problem. I do not want to have to replace the felt trips for the sliding one piece window and preferably not replace the regulator. The problem that I am having is every time that I go to roll down the window it falls, still in tact with the regulator holder under the glass, at and angle toward the interior of the car (or exterior, I can't remember and I don't think it matters which way). Here is an arrow showing which way that the window is falling or coming off of the felt track up top:
*note* this is not my year of door, nor did I take this door picture
Here is the approximate angle the window assumes when it leaves the top felt strip:
It might fall more or less than that now that I think about it. So the window falls at an angle as soon as it is not being kept up by the felt strip in the top of the window hole. I can roll the window all the way down, but when I try to roll it up, the top of the window hits this seal:
I then have to use something and pry the window away from the seal while rolling the window up.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this without replacing too many parts? I don't want to replace all that many parts if I don't have to. It would be great if I could just straighten or re-secure a certain part. Any help _________________ 1975 (Standard) Flame Bug

Without a picture of the door and window mechanism you have it will be tough to say. It sounds like the whole regulator is missing some attachment screws causing it to shift when the weight of the window goes down.
Take the door panel off and snap some nice close pics of the inside of the door. Edge to edge is the best and we might be able to see what's going on.
One piece glass is heavier, so the door and regulator have to be compatible for it to work.
Get some pics, will help a ton. |
