Well I placed an order for some window scrapers, fuel filter and started toying around with my 1.9. Heard a whirring noise and noticed some shaft play in the pump.
Ready to place another order for a pump, hoses and stat. better to find this I just got back from busses by the bridge and the coolant system is the only mechanical thing I haven't touched....yet
Any debate on the 80 vs 87 degree? The van won't see cool temps in so cal, don't need heat and figure the 80 is better
The only good sign came when I took the A/C bracket off and saw the VW canada rebuild sticker! |

I bought an 80 degree thermostat on the basis that it would make the engine run cooler. But after reading various forum posts I didn't use it and installed a stock thermostat. The thermostat sets the minimum temperature not the maximum temperature so doesn't actually make your engine run cooler when it is fully open - i.e. on a hot day and under high load. If you want the engine to run cooler you can install lower temperature switches on the radiator so the fan kicks in sooner, but I am not going to worry about doing that either. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

X3. There is a world of difference between a hot engine and an overheating engine.
For proper performance and long life, you want a hot engine.
If the engine overheats (with a functioning thermostat), the problem and solution lies elsewhere. |
