I started these questions as an addition on another thread, but got no responses so here is a new post with my questions.

Not quite. The empty position is used for a low intensity running light, the outer position is used for a 21W brake light, and the inner position is used for 21W fog lights. 21W could very easily melt the lense in that position.

I wanted to try a LED backup light and compare it with the incandescent light. I noticed the empty socket and did a search and came up with the above info. My question is when does that socket have power? Why not put a bulb in there just for some more illumination for other drivers to see?

In Europe they are tail lights.

The single light on right is for a fog light.

The middle two - top one is reverse and bottom has a 10w bulb that is on the same time as any of the front lights ( we didn't have 'side markers' in our indicators/traffic direction flashers or whatever you call them over there!!! In the headlight there is a 5w side light in the reflector bowl and then the usual dipped/main beam)

Left two - top is indicator/traffic flasher/blinker bulb. Bottom one is brake light.

Been few years since I've driven in the US but IIRC you have some weird(to us anyway) going on with your lights over there Laughing

At night, when you have headlights on, what light acts as a rear tail light/position marker?

Oh , and to answer your question , which I successfully managed not to do very well....

It should have power as soon as you put any of the front lights on (totally confused now what you call yours over there, but the rocker switch to the left of the speedo)

That's IF vanagons have euro spec wiring loom on the rear.

If I'm not mistaken there are a few threads about that open socket. I believe you have to run a jumper to it to get power.

Look in the FAQ. There are a few threads there that show what to do with the socket.

many of us have done that mod
there is no center +12v power pin, you have to mount one of these replacement pigtails (requires modification to fit) or a custom LED (red) into the hole
pigtail is available at your local FLAPS in the replacement electrics isle.
