This was my dad's 73 he had in the 80s. He drove it to HSU (College in Nor Cal) from Texas and back multiple times. He had just sold a motorcycle to buy the bus and was not used to the slowness of a bus. He said he drove it 1000s of miles with his foot to the floor until he finally blew the engine one day. This picture was taken before my dad was driving through the moutains and had the thought "They say this is a porsche motor? Well Im going to drive it like a porsche" . He hit a embankment and made the bus flop onto its side. He said it didn't even break a window and a tow truck flipped it back over and he drove it home . He still sold it for more than he bought it for even with the crushed side. I wonder what ever happened to this bus.....

This is a great thread to start the day with! Didn't know it was in here... My dad (who was also in a bagpipe band ^^^) and his friends had a lot of bugs and busses starting pretty much from the late 1950's through the 1980's and Dad shot a lot of Kodachrome and black and white. Just a matter of getting this stuff digitized. We grew up in our parents' 1969 dark green Deluxe, plenty of slides of that with us kids all through the 70's...
I thought this tragedy from page 2 had an interesting story...
From the story that went with it...
Intent on owning the car again, Ms. Squires hopes that Allstate will give her first right of refusal. Her son, Kyle, who refurbishes cars as a hobby, already is planning to put a Porsche engine in the old bus.
Let's hope he doesn't.
"I don't think I could afford 25 grand. I am hoping under five," says Ms. Squires, who earns $17 to $20 an hour. Then, on second thought, she adds: "There is always the charge card...I have a little in retirement. My boyfriend said he'd help."
Let's see the boyfriend man up! Kind of doubt Allstate is going to let her have it back for five grand. |

My two brothers and myself (on right) during a four week camping trip from Connecticut to Newfoundland Canada in 1979. The five of us camped every night of the trip except for the one night we stayed at a hotel in St.Johns. Who says you need to travel lightly in a westy? |

Looking closely that appears to be a late model bus 72+. Why?
Air intake scoops are larger than the early bays. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc

Shit come on guys. Dont post a pic next to a train next to some old buildings - now. I can do that tomorrow if I want. In this thread the 80's pics are pushing it, but have more relevance to he thread than the other
Do you want to see a pic of me with my acid wash jeans, high top fade, Depeche Mode listening, Sony walkman wearing teen ass in a bay?
I have those pics for days I had to ride to basketball practice in a early bay with the back window broke out. But I have no shots of Glamis when I was 17 and all you saw was Bays and Winnebago's. _________________

1974 - my older brothers '68 Bus
First trip to the Grandparents house in Yucca Valley, CA in the bus
I have many fond memories riding " shotgun " ! The bus that started it all for me.
I remember going to look at it. Our Dad took my bro, and of course I went along. I remember
how clean it was. Heck it was only six years old. It had been repainted; originally Arizona Yellow, walk thru with black interior.
A few years later, parked out front of our house with our surfboards on the neighbors roof. Yeah, we walked to the beach. Those were the days!
wheels are now painted white, and Aloha surf racks! Fer Shur!

Somewhere near White Pass in Alaska? Circa mid 1970's. Shot from Grandpa's airstream. He was admiring the scenery. 40 years later I'm admiring the bus. _________________ 1977 Westfalia "Happy"

Mid 70's. Skagway, Alaska. A bug and a bus! Looks like a maroon beauty hiding on the left too. _________________ 1977 Westfalia "Happy"
