Hello all!
I recently got a 73 beetle.. It is all original other than wheels and a radio upgrade...
It has a bunch of unique options...
So far I do know that it was made August of 73
I'm not sure the market it was built for.. If anyone can point me in the right direction to search that would be awesome
69 and under front turns
Low back seats with 73 and up tracks
All steel dash
Minimal headliner
Bus looking steering wheel
No chrome, emblem, or vents on the hood
No vents in the deck lid
No vents behind the quarter windows
Swing axle tranny
H4 headlights

Hi,
Joel is right (as always ), it is the German Sparkäfer built in this version from August 1973 on (before it still had the rounded bumpers dropped in the US in 1967). So your example is one of the very first!
The small headliner and the missing Chrome show that it is the real Basic Beetle (originally delivered even with a 6 Volts electrical system; 12 V cost extra as well as the fuel gauge, the heated rear window, the backup lights...). It originally had matt black bumpers and not chromed but silver painted blinkers. Even the front pop outs were painted silver and not chrome.

From August 1974 on the Sparkäfer had blinkers in the bumpers, missing glove box deck lid, missing hubcaps and less engine insulation. 12 Volts, sas gauge and heated rear window still cost extra...

There are not many pictures available of the 1974-1978 basic black-bumper Sparkäfer (the Mexican Beetles sold in Germany after the end of the Emden priduction on Jan 19th 1978 were all luxury versions with chrome and full headliner). Furthermore, many people "upgraded" their basic Beetle with chrome, glove box door and other stuff. It is somehow surprising to see 6 Volts bulbs in elephant´s feet taillights.
The link shows a german "garage find" of an completely unmolested 1974 in your color, but the more expensive luxury version of the 1200 (chrome, full headliner and so on).

I didn’t realize 1200L had full headliner. Am helping a friend restore his 1200L. His did not have a fuel gauge. _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74

Hi,
the 1200 L from German production: "L" für "luxury"... definitely had a fuel gauge. There are also 1200 models from Yugoslavian production in the seventies and I am not sure whether these had a fuel gauge... but the have a "1200 J" on their rear deck lid. A car from Bangalore (with the steering wheel on the right?) also could have been made in South Africa, Indonesia or Australia and therefore be a different beast.
Sometimes it is difficult to differenciate between the 1200 and the 1200 L, because many people "embellished" their 1200 with chrome parts and extra carpet because these items were easily available as used parts.
The small headliner is difficult to replace (the clamps for the bis headliner next to the rear window and on the B-pillar are missing on the 1200), thus this often is the safest feature to tell whether you have an 1200 or an 1200 L. |

Every time when I see one of these German spec. cars here on TheSamba I'm wondering how these made their way to the US. Are these cars from US army members that took them back home?
As German cars of this time had to fulfill lower emission standards are there no problems to use them in the US?
A 1200L for Europe should have a fuel gauge, full headliner and full chrome trim. _________________ AC:

His car is a German production LHD 1200L. We have the Birth Certificate. It was converted to RHD at some point. I don't have confidence that anything on the car now is what it left the factory with, but it did have a rare option of twin cyclonic airfilters (only right side one remains). _________________ 1971 1302LS Convertible (RHD) owned since '74
