i didnt bother to scroll to page 9 of the thread (viewing on old phone with slow data plan) but i too am interested in tracking down the original engine for mÿ 6/63 23 window, 99.5% original metal, 95% OG off the factory parts. i
have had my bus for 23 years but it literally hasn't been out of the garage once for 16yrs! at point in life where I'm back in to doing re right thing with it, and makin it as perfect and original as reasonable
possible. my m-code plate says, without goin out to
look, 427, which for that year is the North American package with the 1500. the numbers range is 227033-265438. if numbers were sequential thats about 28,000 engines!
anyway for those who are looking in he "neighborhood", my experience tells me that an efficiently run, large corporation with a complex supply chain, producing near its maximum rate, keeps supply chain production and product manufacturing tightly linked for cost and efficiency. so i personally am keeping my eye on the range that is specific to the date on my m-code. just my 2 cents:)
so with that i ask that you check your piles of old engines, and the ones in the back of your buses. Finally (long winded post due to my multi decade absence from the type 2 world. my bus was one family befor i acquired it, and beote i acquired it, it lived in WA, and Sacramento for a breif time. so if there are old cases there I'll see you asap! finally an aside maybe found on another post, I'm trying to track down 4/63 or 5/63 wheels |

VIN # 301 XXX is November, 1957
This would be an engine # between 2 074 251 and 2 116 308
I didn't do all the math since you didn't post an exact VIN but your guess of 2 102 428 might be accurate given where 301XXX falls within the month of November. It could also be something less, like 2 090 000. Finding something that is even the same month is usually a great find. _________________ How to Post Photos

I'm guessing the guy has an unstamped short block from the 1970s?
I was surprised to read that VW transferred engine identities through the exchange engine program (see under 'short block' below)
There must be lots of 'matching number' engines out there that aren't actually the originals. The exchange engine markings should be the giveaway....

I've got an unstamped B code 1600 engine in my single cab. |

We saw this topic last week, so we searched for the serial numbers on these engines. They consist of bare cases to long blocks all the way up to completes. Some are running, however, most are frozen.
These serial numbers are available:
3731064
2981372
2720026
3876288
3107205*
1488937*
38669777
1/1147737
1104504
1659316
1317381
3780629*
2110219*
1799018*
2977592*-
153821*?
1193766
1295468
2468297
3056779*
163720?
2594055
2564405
1639593 was running
1297577 runs
1679414 runs
I hope this helps someone in the community.

what does a stamping on the case below the engine # mean? Is 8W on left side and R2 on righ side?
Thanks Al |

Looking for a correct block / motor for my September 15, 1966 built 1967 bus. Looks to me like it would be an HO with the next three numbers being between 272-283. Please correct me if I'm wrong about that number sequence. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

I would say yes but given that there is a weird mis-sequence there in the "official" charts it would be nice if someone with a Bus from 9/66 who has the original engine could report.
This might be a tough piece of info to locate. _________________ How to Post Photos

Good read and updates! In my case I have a complete turn key 36hp that was never assigned a number. I have a number I would like to stamp it with. Since my last post I have heard Mr. Joe Ruiz might have an original set of number stamps. |

That's simply wrong, and serves no purpose. _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

Strongly disagree. Purpose served will be for my own collection. If for some reason I decide to sell the vehicle, I will disclose the fact the engine is not original to the car. Or are you saying since the engine has survived all these years intact like that, why bother? |

I'm saying it's dishonest. Eventually it will be misrepresented. What purpose does it serve to you... in your collection? _________________ Looking for a correct 1967 rear seat

I see your point, no way of knowing its fate outside of my ownership. I did not ponder that. Something to think about. |
