In my opinion, stamping numbers on the blank case is as bad as turning a nice 15 window into a 23.

i am not sure this is such a problem, for several years VW did stamp replacement cases with the old engine number. Is it really better to leave an un-numbered case un-numbered? We are not talking about vin numbers here.

With the same logic (later misrepresentation) you could say that leaving the block un-numbered lets somebody else punch in whatever numbers they feel like punching in...

i totally get the whole "original engine" original paint, original everything idea

Maybe a good compromise would be the original number followed by an X?

As to a later owner stamping it, you don't need a blank to do that. Talk to the Corvette guys about "shave and restamp". Misrepresentation is wrong no matter who does it.

What is the missing sequence? Here is October 17th bus' original engine number: H 0199245

That is useful.

If you look at the charts for June-September, 1966 the numbers are a little wacky:

Your October, 1966 bus engine # report makes me think the ending October number there might be out of wack too.

Looks to me like the August number is the one that's out of wack.

Hi all, I have a early May of 58 panel van. I would like to see if anyone has a 36hp engine between:
345-671 and 463-618
Actually, any 36 would be good but a period correct motor would be sweet.

I have two 40horse cases with no stampings present.

Saw this on the Inland Empire Craigslist (CA) today. Appears to be a May 1955 case #20-1058216.

Distributor shows it could be a bus engine unless it was changed.

As a unit repair tech in 79- it was almost a given that the numbers on a rebuild new case were stamped into a rebuild- When The place closed the shop foreman gave me the letter stamps and the numbers- but the numbers were just a shorter than VW's originals. Believe this was the case for all stamp sets coming out of Oregon.

SO-- if any one has an engine with numbers just a tad to small- would like some references- thanks Bill.

I freaking love this thread!!
A man can dream, can he not?!
I’d love to find a 36hp engine around the 420xxx mark, the last couple months of Jan/Feb of 59 before the Bastard took over.
Noticed through the thread that hasn’t been any 400’s, they’re out there, for each and every one of us!
