Yea, but 4 hours in a shop with someone guessing and throwing parts at a problem and it pays for itself.

The tool isn't that much by itself.

Yes, but you have to have an ECU that is wired for it. You can wire your ECU yourself and save some money, but I would rather pay the money and have it done by an experienced person. Van Cafe and Jim Schumacher stand behind their work!

When I first bought the kit my ECU, itself, was the problem and their wired ECU solved the problem. In the years since then I have used it to diagnose other Digifant problems in my Vanagons. The instructions and explanation of the Digifant system are excellent and are worth the reading just by themselves. If you have Vanagon friends you can help them diagnose problems they have.

I threw a lot of parts at my problem before buying the kit, money wasted.
I bought the kit, money well spent.

Worth every penny Exclamation

You will agree after using it the first time.
Such a time saver, no more guessing or throwing money at parts you don't need.

You can build one yourself with parts from Radio Shack.
You are paying for the ease of plugging it in and diagnosing.

I highly recommend using a D series ECU with the DigiTool.

I would hope any serious owner would already have a spare tested working ECU. They don't die very often but they can and sometimes do die suddenly and without warning. Having one on-board means a quick self rescue. I like to have the spare ECU be the one with the diagnostic tool connector.

I have the tool and spare ECU in all 3 of my waterboxer vans.

Me too.
If you want reliability, a DigiTool, fuel pressure gauge and oil pressure gauge will cover most issues.

Mark's bypass harness is a good idea to have with you as well.
Search bypass harness and build one.

Well in between my last post and this one i have purchased one. I have been throwing money at the van (parts that should have been replaced anyways) to resolve my issue. Ill find out whats going on when it arrives. Once again thank you for the help.

While i have learned A LOT that i didn't know before it will be nice to get a real diagnostic tool in my hands.

It saved me a ton of money I'm sure of it. I was lucky and the previous owner supplied it with the van.

The tool told me the system was losing power on the circuits in general. Every other component was working as it should according to the readings.

Solution ? The damn harness bend under the rear seat had a break in the wiring. I flipped around the ECU and been driving it ever since without a miss (until it gets a permanent fix).

I am confident I would have thrown tons of money into swapping parts if I didn't have the tool and still been frustrated as hell....

I have the wired ECU and the OG ECU in both of my Vanagons. I carry the tool as part of the spare parts and tools.

I believe the kit I bought does not have a wired ECU. Will I be able to continue to use my ECU for normal use afterwards?

The ECU must be wired for use with the digitool. The wired ECU will work in the vehicle without the tool. The OG ECU should work in the vehicle without the digitool. If the vehicle operates with the wired ECU, but not with the OG ECU, then the OG ECU is bad. If you bought the kit you should have the digitool and an ECU wired for the digitool. You will probably end up with two working ECU's, one wired and one OG. That's not a bad thing.

Thanks Tom. I am buying from a third party, I am not sure the ECU is included with the rest of the kit.

Can you elaborate on this "bypass harness"? Or provide a link?

Thanks.

If not, you can buy a wired ECU from Van Cafe
