Hi Folks,
Is this round vent in the engine deck stock, or something a PO added? It's in the rear left corner, behind the spare tire well.

What's in the engine compartment a gas heater? _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

No, it has a BA6 under the belly, but the only thing in the engine compartment is the engine itself..
Actually, the entire stock heat system is missing.
The rear defroster is INOP, so I was thinking this might be an attempt to defog the rear window. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

Just a weird hack then. Try to source all the stock pieces for the stock heating system as it does work pretty well when complete. Especially hooked upto a BN6 gas heater! _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

I'll bet it was an intake for a recirculating heat system that was installed at one time. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

Yeah, bet it hooked to a tube going to the heater fan. Not a bad idea really. Just have to make sure the rest of the system doesn't suck in any other fumes. _________________ '72 Elm Green Deluxe |

That is where I am cutting the hole for mine. There is a commonly available flange fitting (it's actually a outdoor drain) That makes a clean job of transitioning to 3 or 4" flex duct. You just rig it in the winter to recirculate air from up front at idle. cap it in the summer. |

Great, thanks guys. I'm going to close it off for now.
I'm using the BA6 (refurbished) as a stand-alone heat system. It's surprising how much heat it actually cranks out, but it would do better with a bigger distribution fan. I also have to close off air leaks around the cabin - I feel a cold draft coming from the back of the bus while at speed. Toasty warm around the town, though! _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

The stock BN6 air inlet is behind the rear seat. Isn't that where yours is? _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

I'll bet you do, if that isn't connected to the booster fan the pressure in the engine compartment would make for an icy gale blowing up out of there any time the bus is in motion. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Here is a pic of the stock fresh air intake. Only the green part is inside the cabin.

Update: I removed the vent today and sure enough, there was a remnant of a PVC flex duct attached to it. It probably was a heat recirculating system like you said. I added some duct tape to the equation to cover it and took a test ride - very very much better! I would say it cut down on the icy breeze about 75%. The bus is much warmer now - even on a single digit morning.
Thanks folks! _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

Did you happen to take a picture of it when it was out?
Thanks

in your first pic, it seems to have a cover plate on it. So the draft was coming through this? |

There's no cover on it.. it's just an open, screened hole.
I didn't take any photos while it was out, but if you think it's worthwhile I don't mind doing so. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI
