I have a nice one like pictured for the heavy snap rings on the LandCruiser, and also a model where the jaw tips can be replaced for different snap ring types. Remarkably it also can be reversed for pushing inwards or outwards. They are fiddly and awkward, but when push comes to shove will get the job done versus jumping in the car late in the job and running off to find yet another snap ring plier type. I've used them a variety of ways.

Got the job done this morning and the Vanagon is back on the ground. I lifted the body and wheels to get underneath and in retrospect it might have made the job easier if I had driven it onto ramps. The snap ring was a bit difficult to to get off with my snap ring pliers and I used screwdrivers to bend and pry it off. I got the CV joint off the axle with a large bearing puller. I inspected, cleaned, and packed it. The installation was a bit difficult with the axle on the vehicle. I used a large socket and a MFH to gently pound it on. In retrospect it probably would have been easier, and less chance of damage, if I had pulled the whole axle and did the removal and installation on the bench. My snap ring pliers would not work with the pointy end snap ring. I bought another from the FLAPS and spread it in the middle. In retrospect, the Knipex snap ring pliers would have made that part of the job a cinch. Hopefully, after lubing three CV joints with the Van Cafe needle and repacking and rebooting the fourth, the clicking on left hand uphill turns will be a thing of the past.

Thanks for the help and input.

Aloha
