I think I've seen them on some low-milage early early bays. Let me check and get back... _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

I have not seen them and they are not listed in the parts manual.
It would be interesting if you found them.

I didn't find them, but I read about them here:
http://www.itinerant-air-cooled.com/viewtopic.php?...ps#p177198
I have three four sets of original CVs off various early bays, including my own 80k original 1969 joints. I will look at them and get back to you next time I visit.

I'd like some verification that covers were used until or through 1969. Also, Robbie, on yours, do you see lipped stub axle flanges, like the transmission CV flanges so you could rest the CV inside and get the screws started that much more easily. It was only 2AH (two years past Heinz Nordhoff), so quality still counted in 1969.

Glad you chimed in! I often feel guilty for ripping off your example photographs; my hands are usually too greasy for something as unrelated as pictures during messy operations...
I do have the flanged stub axles. They make installing the CVs much easier and prevent grease-flung messes.
I'll check for caps when I'm at my parents house this weekend. I have mine, two sets form '71 buses, and an original set from a '75 bus. Why, when I ripped off those original German axles for shiny EMPI replacements, I thought I was doing my bus a favor. My how times have changed.

I used delicate plastic ties. Easy. Easy on rubber. Easy to install. Plus, you use designer colors, orange for the 914, red for the Karmann Ghia . . .

I have just schaged oneside on my 1978 2 litre. I used the same brand in the book and the washer supplied was to small to go ver the axel. My guess is because they fit many applications it may be used on other vehicles. _________________ 1978 Westfalia Camper |

My tourist delivery '68, production date 3/17/68, had the inner covers. I don't think all 4 were there and not 100% sure it they were OG since I am the 3rd owner. But the second owner was not mechanical at all so I suspect they were. I did not reuse them, if I find them I'll post a pic. _________________ __________

The spring washer was eliminated decades ago. Not sure why, but I presume that if one doesn't get the snap ring well seated the spring washer will cause the snap ring to pop out of its groove possibly leading to a failure. |

I could not find my caps, but I'm sure they are around somewhere. I will hunt some more.
Today I was at the VW shop and the mechanic said he believes the caps were used in '68 only buses. He said the CV had a lip machined into them so the cap would fit into the CV and the CV would fit flush on the axle or transaxle. _________________ __________

Thanks for the update Rich. Of fourse I forgot to unpack and look at my OG CVs last weekend when I was near them...
Are you using your original CVs that should have the lip in them? It would be cool to see a picture. Or maybe the lip stayed on if it was less expensive to keep the tooling the same for later CVs?

I am currently running the CVs that came with my bus. I beleve 3 are OG '68s and one is an OG '78. Next service I'll try to remember to take a pic and post it.
We did look a several CVs at the shop, some OG some aftermarket. Non of them had the lip. _________________ __________

I only clamp the wheel side of the joint. I've found that this allows the boot to relieve any unseen stresses during high revolution spinning of the shaft as well as the up/down movement. I now have 17 years since my previous CV refurb and all is well. _________________ 1972 Westy Hardtop/Type-4 2056cc
