Is there anything closer to downtown Chicago than Indiana Dunes State Park?
We need to head back East and not much is coming up that's less than an hour from the city.
Thanks. |

House (driveway) in the woods, borders a park, fire pit, utilities, shop with tools, ten minutes from Metra. PM if interested. Very low rate. _________________ Skip

I live in Lakeview around a mile south of Wrigley Field. Your welcome to take a parking pass from me and stealth camp on the street. We've did this once before with a few brothers traveling from Canada and they had the top popped all night and everything. No one bothered them. We're a block from the Wellington Brown Line stop.
I always go kinda far to camp, not much around |

Just read your whole post. I have an office with gated parking power and water hook ups like 10 blocks west of downtown loop. Put up a fellow samba user two years ago. Very safe and very free |

Before the Masters of the Universe bought up all the tickets for the Dead show in Chicago, I was looking into camping near downtown.
I emailed the city parks department about camping at Northerly Island which is supposed to open this summer. I won't paste the entire email thread as I do not believe the person from parks and rec who responded to me intended to share the whole internal parks dept thread but from what I can infer, the city has apparently been inundated with camping requests and don't want anything to do with camping near downtown, i would guess, until after the 7/4 weekend. Here is the response that I can share:
"Good afternoon.
Thank you for contacting the Chicago Park District.
Unfortunately, the Chicago Park District do not have campgrounds at this time.
We do host instructional camping programs including our Family Camping Overnights on select dates each summer session, however, those specific programs are the only type of camping that we facilitate at this time.
For campgrounds in the area, check with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County at http://fpdcc.com/camping/ as they will open five new campgrounds beginning summer 2015.
Thanks so much for reaching out to us. Please let me know if you have any other questions." _________________ 1986 Wolfsburg Weekender
