I know this is beat to death elsewhere, but, you are my peeps. And so it goes.
Stock 2.1, runs great. Wanting to beef out my rubber a little. I am thinking 215/70R15 Geo's but am worried about the larger diameter and stock powerband. Who has bigger tires and a stock engine and sees no problems? |
I think maybe some of it depends on what type of van you have, too. I hear a lot of people say you lose power and speed, but when I upgraded to 215/70/16s on my Weekender, I found that I'm actually moving faster most of the time. Part of that is because I didn't notice a significant drop in power. But it's also because I'm much more comfortable driving at faster speeds with the larger foot print. More stability, less effect from crosswinds, better handling.
Of course, I also upgraded my springs and shocks at the same time. 16" wheels, 1.5" lift springs, and Bilstein HD shocks ... I'm totally a happy camper. The only thing missing is a new sway bar from T3 Technique. Waiting with great anticipation for one of those!
Maybe the folks that say they lost a lot of speed didn't realize the calibration of their speedometer is now reading several miles per hour slower than it used to. In my case, I need to add an additional 4 miles per hour to the speedo reading to get my actual speed.
The benefits of larger wheels and tires far out way any downsides. _________________ 1986 Westfalia Weekender

Good looking! Try some Baby Oil on the bumper plastic end cap on a corner to see if it helps so you don't get oil all over it if you were going to paint it! |

First time post so hopefully all comes out well I'll post some more pics in a few days that show the yakima / hi lift mount/ hella 500/ etc. I haven't had much time to test the Peloquin yet but I'm very happy with the 5.43 RP. The 8500ft elevation and 15" tires were really bogging down the stock 2.1., plus 1st gear felt too tall for forest roads. Changing out the ring and pinion really helped my hill climbing ability. Once I add more power I'll prob change the 4th from a .82 to a .77, but for stock power I'm really happy with this setup.

Westy Ventures TDI starter
Hella 500 Black Magic 100w
58" Yakima crossbars, Slee off road Hi Lift mount, Fiamma bike rack

A couple of updates to our UK Pre-runner...
After nearly two years of ownership I've just realised we have factory fitted LSD which is a nice surprise!
Also fitted new GoWesty! poptop which has impressively survived lots of storms admirably.
And to recap...
1.5" rise springs w/ front spacers
BFG AT tyres
and KYB gas shocks _________________ VW T25 Westfalia Club Joker, 1988, 2.1 iDJ

How is this setup working out? Any CV issues from the syncro springs? _________________ 85 Westfalia Weekender

We just drove 6 hours one-way to Wisconsin in the Westy on Wednesday to pick up this beauty. I've been wanting a Bostig passenger van for a while. I was going to pick up a good, clean van and do the conversion myself, but I was able to find this already converted and loaded with lots of extra goodies for a great price. It's an absolute blast to drive. Next on the list is one of T3's new anti-roll bars and a Bostig HC oil pan.
It has 1.5" of lift with SA 15's and Bilsteins. The Bostig looks nearly identical to my Group21 on my Westy, and it's a crate engine with only 1500 miles on it. One of the previous owners went absolutely nuts with the add-ons (safari basket, skid plate, plate steel bumpers, rock sliders, spare tire/jerry can swing-away), and it's all really well made and functional. There is very, very little rust as it was recently transplanted from Nevada.
The wife has adopted it. It's mostly going to be hers to drive, but you can bet that I'll be "borrowing" it frequently.

I saw this and thought, "That's my van!"
A few subtle differences, and eventually, the color will change.

Indytriple,
I think I recognize that Vanagon! If that's the same one, a prior owner was on the Samba:

Indytrippple,
Dig the new ride. Not sure about the hat though. Is there some function there I'm missing?
