I've been having this problem with the 73, whenever I'm in third or fourth gear the gear stick shakes quite a bit, enough to make it chatter. Drives me crazy, and I can put my hand on it to make it stop, but is there a simple solution that will solve this problem?

When you did your carpet, did you move the shift plate that is under the boot ?

Nah, just moved it alittle so I could find first easier. Also I noticed the problem before that, but it seemed intermittent.

Verify your shift rod bushing and clip in the tunnel, plus the shift coupler at rear are all in position and good shape. The coil spring that is compressed with the shifter installation also need to be in place. Further, it helps to have heavy grease applied to the shift ball and cup, and of course, the shifter bolts through the plate fastened tightly. I recall this was actually an issue with some of these cars as new from the factory. It won't rattle at rest if it is supported and can't move around. Also, the smoother the engine is running and the better the engine and transmission mounts isolate the vibration, the less rattle you have.

Along that same train of thought, is it also possible that having a poorly balanced wheel might transmit extra vibrations to the shifter and cause it to rattle?

I shall verify those items this week, I would like to think my engine runs pretty smooth, the mounts looked good. Maybe a wheel? If I recall one of them in the rear needs the camber adjusted. It occurs at higher speeds, on smooth roads, the lever its self just moves left to right pretty rapidly - I don't notice any major vibrations. But will pay more attention on the next drive

I once pulled a shifter to find the tunnel stuffed with bubble wrap - an effort, I think, to quiet the rattle!

Here's mine, I don't exactly know what it looks like when worn - so maybe someone will be able to tell right off.

your "looking" for play in it. This is what transfers the shift from the shifter, down the shaft, thru coupling to the trans. No play=Good.

Play in the screw or play in general? Because it has a good amount of play in each gear

as you move the shifter it transfers movement to the shaft, travels the shaft to coupler which makes the connection to the trans/hockeystick. What you want is for the hockey stick to move as you move the shifter (all as one). If the coupler is sloppy, shifts will be sloppy.

When I was 17 my best friend ( who became a very well paid super mechanic ) and I replaced the shift coupler on a 63 bug I owned. He still says it was one of the hardest small jobs he has ever done. I recall it taking us most of the day. Lost the spring/clip in the tunnel .....

There were no Bentley manuals that I knew of at the time, someone showed you how to do it, or you just winged it.

I have a spair shift rod and coupler - it just needs new ruber. Can I get just the ruber, or should I just buy a whole new coupler?

This morning I cranked up the ghia and it was chattering at an idle - it stopped after I let it idle a bit more, and after driving it it went away. Can anything drastic happen while driving? I'm relying on the car tomorrow, and Monday. After that I'm taking out the shift rod, replacing the coupler if needed, greasing the hell out of Everything, and replacing the bushing(still haven't verified that it's in good shape)
