|
|
Hi All
In the process of putting my dash back togther after 2 years, so my memory is not so good at this point
On the heater box on each side, there are a total of 3 holes. One for the defrost tubes, one for the front vent tubes, and what is the 3rd one for? I can't seem to find any hoses for it and the Bentley is not showing this style of heater box.
Also, what holes do I use for the front vents? The front, or the rear?
Thanks for the help! _________________ 1987 Syncro converted to Westy. Supercharged WBX. Restoration almost complete!

Just finished this myself - my 86 has only 4 outlets from the box:
- large round on sides go to side dash vents
- small round on sides go to side defrost vents
- top 2 to windshield defrost
- bottom to floor
So yeah - not sure what you're looking at... Pics? _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Mine has the small for the defrost, two large on each side fwd and aft, plus the square floor vent outlets. Here's a pic of what I'm trying to figure out:

I don't see the "forward and aft" in your pic, but the one you're pointing to is the one that goes to
my dash vents. I know something changed in 87 or 88 to allow heated air to the vents...anyone??? _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

Early van heater vents hook up to the round openings. Later heater boxes with the oval openings on the other side of the heater core hook up to the heater vents. The later heater boxes still have the round openings but they aren't open.
Are your heater box fittings round or oval at the heater box end? |

Syncrodoka,
The back ones are round and the front ones are oval. If I use the front oval ones, what goes to the back holes? _________________ 1987 Syncro converted to Westy. Supercharged WBX. Restoration almost complete!

Only one pair should be open, if the round openings are open you have the early style and if the oval openings are open it is the later style.
What fittings do you have to connect to the heater box round or oval? |

Where did the heater box come from?
The round holes are on the body and the oval holes are on the lid so they can be swapped around with earlier and later versions to have both holes open.
I have replaced several early front heater boxes out for later boxes on vans.
I have found boxes with only the round openings and others that have both openings with either the round or oval openings open but never both open. |

This is the original heater box out of my 87 Syncro. I will have to look again to make certain they are both open.

Here's a better picture to show my situation. Not sure if I should use the front oval hole, or the rear hole. Also what do I do with the unused one?

That picture shows the oval hole open and the round one blocked from the factory. The oval one would be used in that heater box.
I checked 5 late heater boxes and they all have the round hole blocked from the factory and the oval opening is used. |

You can decide:
Use the oval if you want heat at the vent (like the later vans).
Open up & use the round if you want "fresh" (ambient) air. _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

You can't just choose which one to use.
They take different fittings to attach to the heater box and different length plastic tubes to go to the vent. You would also have to block off the other heater box opening with something. |

I know for certain that my back holes are not blocked off as I can see and move the inside flapper. Should I just seal off the back holes and call it good?

Figured it out!
After all of this research and bugging people, I find that the oval holes in my heater box are sealed
