Little update

Finished up the fuel tank and got the motor in with all the new goodness on it.

Should be driving next week if I have time to button it up.

I bet you found your original fuel hoses on your fuel tank were hard, dry and stiff, like I found mine. I'm glad I changed mine knowing they were 44 years old.

Okay motor is in. Started it up last night and it was having a weird idle issue. It was surging randomly. Just a high idle then low then high again. I have been searching but I havent been able to find anyone with my motor that has this problem. It still needs to be timed as well.

it seems to be an issue with the choke. It isnt reseting it self very quickly. There is a spade connector on the carb. Is there supposed to be a wire running to that? I dont recall this having an electronic choke. There is a brown wire with a female connector on the passenger side of the motor that doesnt appear to go to anything. Maybe that could have something to do with it?

I think all VW motors from the early sixties have had electric chokes. Your carb should have 2 electrical connections, both fed with black wires
coming from the coil + terminal (stock setup). The choke won't come off unless the electric heating element is connected. The other electrical
connection if for the idle cutoff (prevents running-on).

that wire you should just get 12v at it with the key on, the hot side of the coil. 12v opens the idle shutoff solenoid, then other then warms that choke, which has a heating element in it, and gradually opens the chock as 12v is applied. run a wire to each. stock has a wire with 3 female spades, one with two wires and spade on each end. coil>idle solenoid>choke in that order, thought order isnt as large of an issue.

if that didnt make sense, ill try again...

Long time no post! and unfortunately no pics with this post however I will deliver. Once I got the motor buttoned up I parked it and havent really touched it. Ive been spending WAY to much $$ on my other hobby (things that go bang) I am finally working enough overtime to get things rolling again.

Gonna time the motor, any special tools needed other than a timing light? I already set the points in the Dizzy.

As promised pictures. I spent about 3 hours today to wash claybar polish with 1z extra paint cleaner to rid the oxidation then seal with 1z wax. I am pretty happy with the results.

Took the top off to refinish, one of the wonderful OP's was nice enough to belt sand the top and leave grooves. So the project has become more work than anticipated. I will be sanding down all the high spots then using dolphin glaze to even it out. Then one more sand before paint.
