Easy question for someone out there: Approximately how much does a complete (sans muffler?) 2.1 weigh? Contemplating shipping instead of a long drive to pick up.
Thanks. |

has anyone weighed the 4 speed trans--late vanagon? at least 100lbs, right?
I have a conversion power kit weight for my upgrade, but not for the 2.1/ taxle kit. I suspect my new equipment outweighs the volksy kit by 200.. |

If I remember right the syncro transmission was a little over 90 and the 2wd was less. I have lugged both around and they are less then 100 _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia Syncro Hightop

I'm not sure if they are located in your area, but I've been very happy with Old Dominion freight. They actually give you a call in advance to let you know when they will arrive and actually care when loading parts. |

I have been using Uship to send CHC camper roof kits with great results. Very easy to deal with and very good prices. |

How about any body know weight of just the block sans heads? Its down to the case, pistons/cams still in, oil pan on, but no intake manifold, no heads, no exhaust, mustache bar off (making custom hitch), and pulley still on. Trying to decide if my steel shelving can handle it as it would save valuable floor space. Thanks! I bow in your general direction because that must mean you have the muscle to move the thing around and get an approximate weight!! That is my problem - too many years of sports, and bike crashes mean I have an uneasy truce with my back. It will do pretty much whatever I ask athletically, but I have learned what not to ask of it in return for its tolerance of my lifestyle. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

I'll bet you can pick it up if you take that oil pan off.
I ship longblocks including f/w, pulley, w/p, and intake manifold at 260# in a crate that weighs about 40#. And that's deliberately overspec 10-20# to avoid paying overages. So 150# for a shortblock sans f/w sounds right to me.
Not every piece of LTL freight gets weighed every time but it's not unusual for a shipper to weigh it and fudge it higher so they can hit you with an overage. Overage charges are many times higher than it would have cost to write the BOL with the higher weight at the beginning, so if you ship a lot, as I do, it's better to pad up the weight a bit as a matter of routine. On LTL, charges are based much more on volume that weight, so changing the weight of a crate of fixed dimensions (volume) doesn't change the rate charged at all within a pretty liberal range, but if your submitted weight is under the actual weigh-in, or the fudged weigh-in, it can cost you.
These days it's unwise to choose a shipper in advance, because there are online brokerages where you can submit a request to many shippers and receive ranked bids in seconds from an automated bidding system. I've used www.freightcenters.com for 8 years now and have been very pleased with the service. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:
