The Samba is what it is.

Hard to post pictures (ok, not hard, but not as easy as some), full of good info, lots of history, people from all over with different skills.

The history is an amazing thing. this vans/buses/cars have been around for a while and there is a lot of knowledge about nearly any given topic.

It is not face to face, nor is it Facebook. Both of those also exist, but while you can search Facebook, it isn't as useful or as easy. Face to face is awesome, but you are limited to the knowledge at hand and the distance.

Enjoy!

My pet peeve is blame the victim pile-on that happens on this (and many other) forums. Someone posts with a problem they think they caused (rightly or not) and rather than offer help, folks will assure the poster of how stupid they are and how badly they screwed up.

Samba Post: "I think I really screwed up. I changed my pine tree air freshener and now my van won't start."

Samba reply: "Yep. You should NEVER touch that air freshener. It's going to cost you to get it running again. Good luck--you're going to need it."

Even better when someone says..."Use the search function, this has been covered in numerous threads I have posted. I have posted part numbers for a new pine tree air freshner on my such such and build thread. It's on you if you need your hand held through this."

If you don't have thick skin maybe a Vanagon is the wrong vehicle to own.

It's easy to get "baited". I find it easier to ignore.

I have questions about tire and oil choices...

I think it's a crucial time for this forum; you have a lot of members with a whole lot of knowledge who get really excited about groundbreaking innovations and wildly expensive restorations, but who seem to get frustrated by the simple stuff that's been covered in the past, sometime way, way back in the past.

You have other people who just got their shiny new Vanagon and know precious little about its idiosyncrasies, and simply wish to join the tribe and learn through interaction (as opposed to searching the archives.)

Then there are those of us in the middle who are not averse to using zip ties and duct tape to keep our less-than-show-quality beaters on the road and who try to both appreciate the experts and help out the new folks, and sometimes get caught in the crossfire when perspectives on those far ends intersect.

I post my stuff to get feedback and, even if it has been gone over before, to get fresh information out there for new people. I definitely get irritated when I feel I'm being judged or talked down to, but that's because I come here for the helpful vibe and overall strong community.

If I want to get involved with combative, vitriolic name calling and threats, I just go to the LSU football forum. Very Happy

So regarding the new folks, I've spoken to several face-to-face who are too intimidated to post here for fear of being skewered. Those people have no problem going to the various Facebook groups where naive enthusiasm is still celebrated and supported.

This forum risks being reduced to a small group of like-minded, obstinate curmudgeons if it permanently loses its welcoming vibe.

In other words, it will turn into the Vanagon Mail List.

Fire at will.

One of the reasons I added my last name to my signature was so nobody could accuse me of anonymously badgering someone on this forum. Oh wait, I don't own a White Westfalia, so I'm not anonymous anyway... Shocked Laughing Cool Sorry to all White Westy owners.

Seriously, when I first started posting on here I suppose I had thinner skin. When I go back and read those same post now, I find I don't experience the same level of emotion in them I supposed they had back then. Like any community, there will be at least one village idiot and one bully. Eventually you realize who to pay attention to and who to skim past.

I came back looking for this thread so I could post meaningfully (I may have just made up that word!)It's 3 weeks since I sold Scooby and 2 weeks since I bought Daizee (2009 Jetta, 2.5L, 5 cyl,5 spd etc...).

I knew I would miss the comraderyship of the Vanagon community and a place to ask questions, or to answer them and/or give opinions. I miss all of those things but mostly I miss the Vanagon community. I don't have a thick skin unless I'm backed into a corner or my young (if I had any) are threatened but I made it thru 5 demanding years of Vanagon ownership and I am thankful for those who have embraced me in one way or another and yes even the bullies I have found in other threads.

I don't have a lot of online experience outside of The Samba but I have heard and read about horror stories and as I said experienced some bullying but overall I miss this forum and yes I will reply to threads when I feel I might have something to add. I've made GREAT online friends and real time friends in real life at Gatherings. I'd like to thank the Samba and all (well most of) the members for being tolerant and supportive, it has meant the world to me. We come and go and some stay forever and its not that I gave up, I had no choice but to go to a less demanding vehicle and am happy with my 2009 Jetta 2.5L acquisition but its not Scooby the Vanagon but I will adjust. I'll never forget and I hope to be around and serve in any way that I can.

I have started a thread in Water Cooled Vehicles, Jetta, Rabbit, etc... and I'd love for you to visit me and/or offer opinions and input on my newest endeavor which still doesn't feel real. Thank you all Sambanistas and Vanagoners for all that you are. I'm still here just in a different place 'some' of the time. I'll always have Vanagonitis! Zee

i use the delete button a lot more than i used too.
back when i was in the UK i had death threats, proper ones, officers of the law were involved, parties still unknown to me, had some explaining to do.
there's no need for shit like that to ruin our collective hobby/way of life.
i will try and help anyone if i can, unless you drive a ford, i do have my limits.
i've met some fantastical peoples on my travels, through the samba, one or two odd'uns.
if it all gets too much, back away, that's what i've learned to do Wink

to add some vanagon content, lucy got new shoes Very Happy
