Apparently not the front bearings. They've been replaced now though _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

Freakin GPS died, will have to run the backup...
I may hit the road after rush hour and go as far as possible tonite, to get in earlier tomorrow.
Thanks for your support!

Unfortunately, my Vanagon was likely one of the afflicted VW's seen on a flatbed Tuesday morning/afternoon. A transaxle catastrophe decided to unfold just as I started up Pacheco Pass westbound on Highway 152. Though Vanagon-less for this go-around, I hope to see everyone in Hollister between Friday and Saturday. |

Sigh , SF is over and we will have to wait another 365 days to do it again. A great time as always, weather was great and a great group of wonderful people.
Carnage was low as the obstacle course was changed and the trails were well groomed.
I was given an offer to drive GW's Rasta race van with their new 2.7 WBX and injection system. I took it out on the open highway for about 3 miles and back, yeah I'd love to have that stuffed in my camper. I was met by the owner of GW when I got back and asked if I flogged it and took it to Redline, now I wish I had.
The organizers did a great job with enough Porta Potties , fire wood and a great meal. The raffle had some great prizes and the jump house was always busy.
I tried to meet as many new people as I could an put names to handles, but didn't meet my goals as usual.
Had a little carnage to my van ,I added some pin stripes and bent my skid plate.
All in all a great weekend ,if you have not been ,make plans for next year and we'll see you there.

Tequila,
Thanks for the writeup and the pictures as well. Nice to see what is going on down there, and what the setup and festivities look like.
Any more pictures of the yellow van behind the guitar player? First because it looks to be the exact color I chose, but also it looks like it is a cargo van with a divider wall? Cool rig. Nice meeting some of you. _________________ 64 bug

Not sure what it has to do with Syncrofest, but engine conversions should not run you $20K, and if anyone quoted you that then I'd be suspicious.
Buslab's conversion page for CA legal Subaru 2.2: http://www.buslab.com/about-conversions.html
Stephan's Auto Haus for CA legal 1.8T VW engine:
http://www.h2ovanagon.com/H2oVanagonConversions/InstallationPricing.aspx
I think both also offer a DIY kit that is much cheaper if you have the right tools and skills.
I'm not sure if we got a chance to meet, but if you stopped by the water spigot here:
...then you saw my camp, Camp BluegrassWesty, and we might have said 'hello' _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

Finally made it to my first Syncrofest.
Took lots of pics. Met lots of nice people.
Saw hundreds of sweet Vanagons.
+++ to Eric and Seth, (and to Brad who sold me his slot.)
I will see you all again next time.
-Randy
P.S.
Can anybody tell me why I should hit headwinds both coming AND going, along the same route??
It doesn't seem right...

Back from SF and it's like a blurry dream...
Thanks as always to everybody who makes this such a blast for the whole eclectic community. Kids age 5 and 7 were off on their own in the bounce house "don't worry about lunch mom, we'll get nachos and hot dogs," ripping around on their bikes, making friends and getting dirty and tie dying t-shirts and hopping into the Quantum syncro for rides. Brought Nana in the Casita "Westy in-law unit" this time and I think she and poodle Ted met every dog owner (so, 100+ people? Busy!)
And hoping the Buslab beer tasting dance-off for the trophy will become an annual tradition.
My BerkeleyBusMama cup runneth over. Thanks for a great weekend!!! |

Also thanks for the tie dye booth!
p.s. I did some kid craft things this year, giant bubbles and textile decorating and stuff, I'm happy to make that a bigger/more structured contribution of help with the tie dye booth again next year. Saw such cool bus art on and around the vans, I thought some of it deserved its own competition/prize!

Syncrofest was an amazing experience again. Seems each year I leave thinking it can't get better.
Wednesday evening was beautiful after spending the afternoon blasting up I-5.
Took a ride to the top in Joey's Land Rover. Riding in air conditioning, sipping latte's, is the way to wheel.
Bill's sweet '63 Sinka needed a Torque Biasing Differential up by Truck Hill, he had to settle for Three Big Dudes in the back.
Vinnie could only dream of Syncro glory... no TBD of any type could help in this situation.
Back down in camp it was time to find a new PS Reservoir. Thanks to Van Cafe's quick work it was at my campsite within hours. A good ending to a good day.
Matt's Bluestar Syncro looked good on the obstacle course.
The Jagdwagen was out hunting.
This just may be the largest gathering of Country Homes Campers since they left the showroom. Salim was deliriously happy.
I don't think you're supposed to be able to check the rod caps while out camping.
The big ole hole in my pan is ugly.
Time for some campfire magic.
First some strategic planning.
Then some sewing.
A little JB Weld.
Quality Control was on top of things.
Cardboard. Never leave home without it.
And the fix worked. I drove 375 miles home with not a drop of oil leaking out. Thanks to everyone who dropped by to offer help, or stories of their own, or just to laugh with me or at me.
What an event. Another Syncrofest in the books. Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers for another great year. Glad I met everyone I did this year. Still came home realizing I missed out meeting a few I had wanted to. When are the signups for Syncrofest 2016 going to be posted? I need to win a pair of those H4 Squares. _________________ Tim Potts

Thought I might as well add a few of my own..........
Packed and ready to go with my motorbike (I don't have a Syncro doncha know......)
Dave McGrath's Tristar in the driving competition (and also winner of the best campsite award!)
GMW's single cab
With Brayden, Diane and the rest of the group at the top of the hill
The gratuitous group shot at the top......(Dave, RJ, Brian, Matt, me, Dave, & Diane) ps. i'm sure i got some names wrong!
I had a great time! I was so stoked to finally meet & hang out with Shadetreetim, Bluegrasser, 0to60in6min, the guys from SAH, Van Cafe, Go Westy, MyOfficeNow, etc. etc. etc.
I met so many great people & can't wait until next year!

I'm back in Denver. The Syncro made it round trip. I'm not sure how I missed so many of The Samba crew. It could have had something to do with that hill I camped on? I met many wonderful folks. A few future trips are in the works. I fully understand now why there are so many vans in the PNW. The people were great. A huge shout out to all sponsors and organizers. The event was class act! |
