I was told by so,meone at Vintage meet in Seattle that I had an incorrect VW emblem, so I got one that is meant to be a Type 181 emblem.
Ols/Incorrect one
I hope this one is correct. _________________ 63 singlecab

My emblem is like the one in your first photo. At the Kubel Treffen here in Georgia, I looked at all the emblems and a few others had the emblem with the ring around it. I asked Ron about them, but he didn't know if there were two types or not. I have no reason to believe that mine is not original to the car. _________________ 73 Thing (Typ481)

Hi
The first 181s from 1969 till February 1973 (RGB models) have a beetle emblem like the first picture .
The 181s from March 1973 (IRS models) have a late typ3 emblem like the second picture .
Thus the second is original on all Things .... |

Sam, the second one is what I have found on all the Things I have worked on. Looks like a brushed finish. It may take you a few trips to get all the bugs on this one. |

Thanks everyone.
My existing emblem may not be wrong, just an early 73 emblem. Anyway I now have both, so will put on the second one as it appears to be correct. _________________ 63 singlecab

My original paint, original interior, original engine/trans early production IRS '73 has the flat style emblem.
My unknown '74 has the ringed emblem.
For what ever that is worth. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Well I am intending to make some trips in 2013, should christen the emblem. Right now the 2054 motor is out and I am adding 0.060 shims under the cylinder barrels to get my compression ratio about 8:1.
I scored a left side oil bath air cleaner so I am fixing it so that each Weber 34 ICT has its own oil bath cleaner. Just a little re-routing of my oil lines.
The rain has started in Northern California so I need to take off my bikini top and put back the hard-top.
I just guess that I love driving the Thingster so much that I sort of felt if the emblem was not correct, it would be easy to fix. It took me 5 months to find the right emblem, and will probably take another five to put it on, but just driving my Thingster makes me happy. _________________ 63 singlecab

not sure it really matters that much though |

I have always thought it would be old-school-cool to convert the front VW symbol into a peace sign of the correct diameter for nose of my Things.. At one time I had a source for new Thing front emblems. I will have to source them again as my current under the knife Thing has no front emblem at all.. I do have the new nylon keeper plugs... All of the front emblems I have with grooves are too large a diameter to work on a Thing... I wonder if there is a list of front emblem diameters by years. |

I was just looking at mine again this morning. It looks like the first one with the ring around it. I have no doubt it was original.
My question is, what is it made out of? It seems to a very light metal, but almost feels like plastic? I am sure it is metal as mine is slightly bent, and I don't think plastic would do that.
I'm trying to figure out if it can be re-chromed, or if I should just try to polish it up? |

Does anyone have the correct emblem and the ability to scan it for 3d Printing? Not sure what is involved in that but
My brother has a 3D print shop I might get access to.. |

I could take my un-installed emblem to Jeff Gilleland (Solomon Grundy) and he has a 3-d Scanner & printer. He might know what to do.
pmail both of us and we can try to help. _________________ 63 singlecab

Like this Sam?
Did this in Pro/Engineer "Creo" tonight after BLTN.
I will check pins on back with CMM, and then update geometry and then 3D Print some.
It is highly likely I will make changes so the object is not shelled out, solid, and thus make the ABS print stronger.
Next set I will try to build them with some metal threaded inserts, like small hex head screws sticking out. I think the ABS tabs will break off after a few off-road adventures.
Hopefully we can find some metallic paint that won't melt the ABS…
