I picked this Ghia up back in January for my wife. I feel I dodged a bullet, she gave me the choice...find her a 65 Mustang or a Ghia Vert. Well the Ghia won out. All things considered it is a solid car, it has the typical nose damage, and a couple of crappy patches, but the channels and most problem areas are rust free.
Here are pictures the day we picked it up. It came with a ton of extra parts, including a complete extra convertible top and a set of early doors that are in awesome shape. They will be up for sale sometime during the build.

And these are pictures the day we brought it home after a quick wipe down of the dust from storage.

One of the cool things about this build is that the pan is ready to go. Of course I will check everything, but it already has new pans, beam, front disc brakes, rear drums ect. The pan was also powder coated.
In this picture you can see the pan head after I wiped some dust off.

Here is a look at the channels and package tray, pretty solid absolutly no rust through, slight surface rust here and there but that's about it.

When we first got the ghia, I thought that it was a good candidate to just throw some make up on a pig and make it look pretty on the outside and let her drive it. Since getting it I have read and read everything I could and the more knowledge I gained the more respect for the car I got. So I decided to fix things right. A few month back I happened to run across a thread on one of the forums. The guy was doing metal work on a ghia.
Here are some pictures from the ghia he was working on:

I was really impressed with his metal working abilities. And since I knew my metal working skills really suck, I contacted him to see if he would fix the nose and a couple of other issues. His shop is called W.A.R. Will's Auto Restoration.
Well we struck up a deal and Courtney and I towed the car to his shop yesterday.

and this is where it sits waiting on a nose job

He is working it in among several other builds, so progress will probably not be fast, but I still have my car to finish so there is no rush. I will post pictures as I get them from him though.

Fantastic that you chose the Ghia! What shape is the engine compartment in, as to the metal body panels to the sides of the engine?

Will your wife pick the Ghia's color combination (body, top, interior)?

Will you work on redoing the engine while the car is at the body shop? The shop's metalworking skills are highly impressive.

Looking forward to updates.

The wife will have total control as to color combination, but her plans are to pick body color, top, and interior from what was offered for that specific year. Pretty much everything will be as stock as we can get it other than wheels and ride height. I would rather keep it at stock ride height but she prefers them slightly lowered.

Engine bay is in great shape, the battery tray has been replaced, but I have already sourced a replacement. I cant believe I do not have a pic of the entire engine bay but here is what I have.

They do not repop this section for a 64 so I searched and found a replacement here on the samba a couple of months back.

It has a little surface rust and slight pitting, but it will have to do unless I can find a better one before it is time to install.

The passenger quarter also has a bad patch installed, a PO lap welded the new panel on. I am currently looking for a replacement panel for this section and have an ad on the samba. This area was probably replaced when they did the battery tray. More than likely it was battery acid that did a number on it. You can kinda see the lapped piece where I have the quarter in this picture.
I am pointing at the line where they cut the old piece out.

and the last major issue is the nose. no telling what happened here, I know the picture is blurry but you can still make out all the hammer marks.

A minor issue that will be dealt with is the radio hole has been hacked

to answer your question about the motor Rome:
The ghia came with a "rebuilt" 40H. I could tell that the case had definitely been split. I went ahead and split it again just to check things out. Glad I did someone really liked silicone...

I also found an issue with two of the rod bearings, I'll get that sorted out as well.

My plan is to build a complete stock motor for Courtney. I may put a big bore kit in it but other than that I will keep it simple. I want her to be able to get in and drive with as few issues as can be had. I am missing almost all of the tin and will have to source those parts.
I do have the factory air cleaner and fan shroud so that helps out a bit.

I will post more pictures during the rebuild of the motor.

That was the ugliest use of grey silicone ive seen. I wouldnt worry too much about the rod bind until after the crank is sorted and rods resized, new bearings...thats when it needs to be right. Smile

Yowzer Holy Buckets of Bondo Batman..... Not a very solid start. Things are just not as they seem at times. Gonna have to dig in deep this go around, this has got to be the most bondo I have ever seen on a car before. Will took a grinder to the car today and sent me a couple of photos for your enjoyment.

Might need an entire front clip. Of course we will not know the total extent of the damage until all the bondo has been removed. I have lucked out and Bob @ Big Bob's Bugs happens to have a front clip off of a 69 that he cut off years ago because it had never been hit.

The bondo doesn't look all that thick that if sanded correctly and painted a magnet wouldn't have necessarily let you know that the bondo was there.

Holy Cow Shocked
From my screen it looks 1/2 inch plus, everywhere.
Did you meet the artist? Cool

Propane torch and putty knife will take off big chunks at a time w/o the dust storm. Will burn so keep water bucket handy and eyes open.

Thanks for your action plan.

Your Ghia appears to be a "late" '64 (front blinker style, smaller shape of the battery area depression) like mine is. The ch# of mine is 6562XXX. Is yours close?

My car, being out of the NorthEast, had about 1/2" filler at the top of the fenders at the headlights, which were totally rusted out. The rest was not bad as to filler, but it had its share of rust in the rockers as well as behind the rear wheels. Hard to believe but the nose and the vertical center ridge are completely untouched.

Was there really all that silicone on top of the pistons when you removed the heads?!

Careful with this head- it appears as though both combustion chambers, especially the lower one, have significant cracks between the valves-

Sorry I missed everyone's reply I had this bookmarked but for some reason I never got the email, I just dropped the heads off at David's machine shop to have a once over, from my past experience cracks between the valves are not a good enough reason to trash a head, I've had this issue on several of my 2 liters and ran the heads for years with no issues, cracks from valve to spark plug hole is a different story all together. I'm not sure if what we are seeing is really a crack though it may be just grease, that's actually grease you see on the Pistons. My ch# is 6171xxx

Well I started on the rebuild on the rebuilt motor. I dropped the heads off at David's Machine shop. The heads do have new valves in them already but after finding everything wrong about this motor I figured it was worth the extra money to have them gone through.

Moving on to the build, not much to say I ran into a big snag right out of the gate. It has a set of mismatched rods, three rods are 411 and one is 411A so I have ordered a set of rebuilt rods. One good thing the crank was turned when it was rebuilt so I do not have to worry about it. The case is in excellent condition and has no wear on the bearing saddles. I started on the the crank bearings and was ready to install the rods when I noticed that I had issues with the rods. so this is stalled until I get parts in the mail.

I did buy new main and rod bearings, even though the ones on it where new. It looks like the issue that the rods had may have been due to improper installation. Guy who rebuilt it probably didn't tap them as he was installing them. I am thinking that it was either that or the ton of crap I got out of the oil holes in the crank could have had something to do with it, maybe from when the crank was turned

When I bought my Ghia, which was for my wife she could not believe I was buying such a mess. While the car was complete and had not been hacked, it had the usual rust in the rockers. Mechanically it was sound.

This is my third Ghia and have been through dealing with someone else's attempt at a "restoration". Unless you can somehow verify that the work was done right I believe you are better off with a project/basket case up front. At least you know what you are getting into and you don't have to undo what was done before.

That is quite a bit of bondo.

I agree NOVA, I'd rather buy an original paint car that has rust than one that is pretty and shiney. So much can be hidden behind paint. And as far as motors go I never trust the " I just had it rebuilt" phrase

I am kinda in the same boat Vargon, although I have built several beetles and a bus this is my first ghia. The fun is in the research and hands on learning. So I am looking to have a great time with this build.
