I stayed at Diamond lake last summer. Not to far away and some nice campsites right on the lake. Only problem was Mosquitos... |

On my way to Crater Lake NP I recall just sleeping on the side of the road but there were several Forest Roads that you will see en route; I would just wing it you should have no problem. _________________ 1984 Vanagon Westfalia Wolfsberg |

Years ago I followed a guidebook lead to a free FS campground down a long rough road in 1982 Sentra. No water, not much, no cost, not bad. A VW Bus would have no problem. I slept under the stars on a warm night and woke to a strange sound... I was surrounded by a herd of having a midnight snack!
I'll try to track it down tomorrow. |

We stayed in the National Park campground.. last year. Late May
Lots of skeeters with the snow melt..
Big slow and dumb.. but if you did not pay attention they could suck a full pint from you per bite.
If we do it again, I'd stay along the Rogue River.. Lots of great spots in there and the fishing is awesome.
If you drop down the east side.. LOTs of forest service roads into to nowhere.
Good dispersed camping but still lots of skeeters. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

those are straight line runs with light weight race cars for only 1/4mile at a time..
not pushing a loaded brick up a mountain pass with a family of 4+ inside expecting to have an event free vacation..

Lots of off highway dirt road spots on the fire roads/snowmobile trails behind Chemault. The campground that is at the South end of the park at lower elevation has been clear cut a few years ago and I have always had spots there to stay when the upper one is full. Its off the beaten path for normal tourists. |
