It's been a while since you had the seats reupholstered & interior panels created, right? How did they turn out? Silver-Beige vinyl with Silver cloth inserts? |

That's whole other disaster worthy of its own thread. Short version: I met this upholstery guy via a local hotrod club. His dad had a shop for years, has since died, and he's taking over. I saw work he'd done on a couple of other cars and it looked nice. I gave the guy the seats, they're supposed to be done in a week - two weeks max. Several weeks go by and he has one seat sorta kinda in progress, but lots of things wrong. Months go by with excuse after excuse, finally I just ask for the seats back. They are partially done, but he didn't really get the padding right; if they had any more lumps I'd send them out for chemo. I never got around to getting the door panels done because the seats never got done.
This pic doesn't really show the lumpiness and asymmetry. One top of that, he broke one of the adjuster things on the bottom, and scratched the hell out of the seat frame paint.

Absolutely! Just peel back the shitty seat cover and weld it back up. _________________ -Thom

The replacement 1963 T34

You have a very clean, original '63. What's the story? Not a pan-up? It has sparked my curiosity, as it appears somebody went to great detail for body/paint (and probably interior) but wanted to maintain some originality to the car by keeping the engine bay original. Ironically, this is the same mission I am trying to accomplish with my '62 Notchback. The engine restoration in this car especially has me going. Did you restore the motor? _________________ '62 golfblau Typ 311 Limousine

There is a difference in the color you used on your fan shroud that is clearly distinct in the factory grey used on your muffler. What made you decide to use this color? Point being, that most engine restorations for Type 3's I've seen, the color used for the shroud is silver or grey. _________________ '62 golfblau Typ 311 Limousine

The color I used on the fan shroud is... no color.
On the '62, I used a scotchbrite pad to clean off the oxidation, on the '63, I had it media blasted. Then I rubbed on a light oil to prevent further oxidation, and that was it. They're both unpainted metal. I think the shroud on the '63 looks cleaner, but the '62 looks less sterile. _________________ -Thom

Well, I really like what you've done to the '63 motor. The metal on the shroud which you have restored has a gold color to it. I don't know what materials were used to produce this look, but I've only seen it from early photos, and it's rarely duplicated. This is the look I've tried to duplicate on my '62 motor, look familiar?

Patched one of the heater box exhaust outlets tonight. I bought some metric tubing; a thin piece to match the original OD, and a thin piece to slip inside, to help line things up and add some support.

Thom, any chance you remember what size tubing you used? _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof
