These are the first things I grab to isolate a cranks won't start problem.
Starter Fluid. If it fires on this you have a fuel problem.
Please read and understand the directions.
Spark Tester. No Spark you have an Ignition problem.
Be aware these are made for both Points Ignition, which includes electronic points, ie Pertronix etc.
and HEI (high energy ignition) systems.
So get the one you need for your vehicle and read and understand the instructions.

Or if you don't have those on hand.
As mentioned first thing you need to do is determine if it is
1. Fuel
Pour a couple of table spoons of gas down the carburetor throat and try and start it.
If it starts or tries to, it is a fuel problem.
2. Electrical
Test for spark. What you are looking for is a nice hot blue flame. Not an Orange or Yellow flame they are too cold.

Unless you really like a cracked piston, stay away from starting fluid. Is there a point to your post? _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Indeed, why the starting fluid? OWCH!!!! A spoonfull of gas will do the same thing without the needless super low octane and permanent engine damage. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here

I had read WD-40 was not that flammable so once I cleaned a small saw motor bearing of sawdust using it. The saw became a small jet engine the first time it was used, throwing flames about 3'. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I once sprayed out a distributor with WD-40 and put the cap back on. Got in to crank it up. I heard a pop and it wouldn't start. Went back and opened the lid. The distributor cap was in about a thousand pieces! |
