Since the blue lights were a military accessory, I would suspect that they would be very difficult if not impossible to find in the US. Possibly Ebay.de.
Doesn't really look all that difficult to fabricate as long as you have the skills. Attachment points appear to be modified door hinges. If you are doing it on a 74 then you may have to relocate the driver's side mirror.
One "improvement" I would do is to have the power lead come out the middle of the pole rather than the bottom. This would keep you from having to drill a hole in the front quarter panel. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Ron Domeck put one on the airboxes of his 181 Kubel. Nice setup
You might be able to "mock" one up using PVC pipe and fittings to get all the correct angles. Then take it all to a muffler shop to bend the final material to the correct shape. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

Just a helpful hint, not everyone may appreciate a blue light on your car: http://forums.officer.com/t113187/
I desert race as a hobby and many of you have heard about the accident at the California 200 back in 2010 where several spectators were killed. Since then the BLM has required race organizers to have security and course monitors to keep spectators back. At a recent race a course monitor saw what he believed was an emergency where children were coming into harms way. He activated his off road blue flashing light and was able to prevent a possible tragedy. A BLM Ranger didn't like this very much and arrested him first for impersonation of a police officer, but later just issued a citation. Even if you are a "good guy" you could always run into a jerk. |

I can't say for sure, but it's a good bet that the same light was used on the Iltis. Worth a phone call. http://iltisparts.ca |

This will vary from state to state. I know in Washington State that law enforcement will be on you like a duck on a June Bug if you use a blue light (flashing or otherwise). There is some exception to some vintage vehicle tail lights. Red is reserved for fire, green for volunteer firemen, amber for DOT.
In Texas, I've seen DOT, Fire and Police running all three at the same time. Judging from the way Texas drivers operate, I don't blame them. _________________ Walküre Restoration Thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=737492 |

There are a couple of them around, I sold one a few years ago on Samba. The OEM beacon is made by Bosch. The only thing I have left is an orange beacon lens. There is a post for one on German Ebay now but I don't think the guy will ship it to the USA. |

I can say for sure. The Canadians used the same light set-up on their Bombardier Iltis as the Germans did when they had runs with the VW Iltis. I don't know if Bombardier got the light set-up from VW as part of their agreement or if they happen to be starkly similar. I do know the VW Iltis had interchangeable parts with the VW Type 181, and the light was one of those items.
I did see a blue dome sold on the German eBay a few months ago. The beacon itself comes up from time to time on the US eBay and other eBay sights for other countries. It may takes some time but patience in this matter will be rewarded. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

These mounted to the windshield. I think you could extend the pol and make it a side body mount like the 181's and some Iltis use. Iltis poles are generally taller. The other thing is to make sure you have a mount that attaches to your window to stabilize the Beacon pole they are top heavy and like to shimmy without one.
here is mine. _________________ 72 181 Ambulance

I don't think so, The beacon rotates so it would have to be 12v. But that is the correct beacon just needs to be 12v. That kit has many of parts that are shared by the 181, but not all of them. |

FWIW, the Iltis (Type 183) has the same windshield as the Thing (Type 181).
Another tidbit -- Most, but not all, Iltises were 24-volt. VW did make a very limited run of civilian models up to 1981 which were all 12-volt.
I'll let the smarter folks on here discuss what is necessary to make a 24v version work on a 12v vehicle. (There are Iltis and Pinzgauer owners who have some sort of converter that allow 12v accessories to run on their 24v vehicles.) _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI
