I just measured from the back of the cut to the lowest part of the master cylinder. Used the handy xl spread sheet and it looks like I will have about 1/8 clearance between the pan and the cylinder. So if you don't want to start cutting up stuff don't go more than .75 inch pie cut. I thought I could change out the master but the brake lights need to work so I guess that fixes that. More to come later.

Well got the master cylinder pulled and prepped the the metal.
Did a pilot cut for the sawzall
The goods
Tapped it up for cutting.
I used the cutting wheel, grinder with a cut off disk and the sawzall. My grinder died after 12 years of hard labor on my project cars. To bad, I am suprized the harbor freight grinder lasted this long. It went up in smoke LOL
Well can not do much now, have to figure out how to cut the rest. I only have a 2 gallon compressor so the first pilot cut took forever. One thing though, be careful of the fuel line, it was very close. Its very tight for the sawzall but I am sure it would be easier with the body off which I am not going to do. lol Have to pick up the 220 welder from my friend and source some metal for the rear shock mounts. It might be a while for the next update.

I still have to finish up the steering and the front mount tabs on the the body. I think I am finally happy with how it sits. I can still go lower so when I am rolling slow I can drop it static.
I still have about 2" or more of clearance on the pan
The front beam has tons of room and no bottoming out. 
The apron does not have much room but its got holes in the bottom of it anyways..
So few problems popped up kinked fuel line in the tunnel , might have to run whole new one. I also nicked the brake line that goes into the firewall. All I can say is if you have a chance to do this I would do it all over again. I would say that if you have the pan off it would be a lot easier. Also might have raise the fuel tank a little depending on the clearance I have. All for now and I think I am going to blow my $800 budget though.

| Wow!!! Looks good bro!! Do you have any issues with it rubbing in the front when your turning? It's definitely not hard to blow a budget lol. |

I will be able to turn bug def some rubbing. I might go with some different wheels down the road. I might just take some stockers and widen the rears and maybe the front. as far as I can tell its good to roll. I think for freeway driving it will be fine but sharp turns going to have to raise it. I am really interested to see how well it rides after I get it together. Its going to be some time before its gets going again unfortunately.

Went to the woodburn bug show today. Got a window crank wont bore you with that picture.
Got some pop outs! They are pretty old but the glass has roses etched on them. I don't really care they came with the brackets for $20!
The mega score...$30 I think its 1/2 gallon tank and compressor with relay and cut off switch. It works and pumps up so I was a little nervous about getting it that it might not work. 
The stickers are going to have to go.
I am going to redo the lines prob with something little better but I think it need just to be cleaned up.
It seems like it was thought out a little bit at least.
I think the tank is from a refrigerator compressor unit and the compressor from a truck air ride seat. I am only going to run the front air shocks for now so just need a paddle valve and some left over air ride dot hoses and fittings my bro in law has, should work out good. I really need to get moving on this!

Steering I think is done. I was lucky to get several hrs on the bug. So I got a subie steering u-joint from a friend. I just cut the center section out and welded it. I should work ok but I really think need a bushing on the shaft at the fire wall. That can come later. I did put two tacks on the bottom just in case. I fitted a rod notched it for the bolt and clamped it with grade 8 bolt. This can all be taken apart if I have to replace the subie joint.
I also did an alignment. I put the bug up 12" or so off the ground.
with some jacks under it in case it fell. I pulled two strings measure both side from the car to do toe in. Its close I think but it will be good enough to get me to the alignment shop. I have one caster shim which I think I will put on the top of the beam. I should have done that first but I forgot all about it. I think the next task is the fuel tank fitment. It does not fit so I will have to raise it up. I don't want to cut it up though. I am trying to get everything done so I can move this pig. One of the worst things you can do is not have a car that moves on its own. It works out a lot better when you can move the car in and out of the garage.
As for the pop outs. I got all the tint off of them and they look tons better, except the seals.. LOL Rose vine engravings for the win!

Enjoy this build. Just got the same wheels as yours last week. Probably going to strip them and have them powdercoated black as well. Did yours come with the center caps or did you have to locate them separately?
I may end up doing the pie cut on mine as well at some point but I need to focus on getting it running first.

The caps I got at Cip1. Prob going to get the chrome lugs later though. I wish the offset was different on these, its def tight in the back but I don't think it would be so bad if I was not 3 inner clicks in the back. As far as the pie cut few more things to get done. I have not put in the master brake cylinder either so I know its going to be tight when I put that in. I hope I don't have to make that fit. The fuel tank will have to be raised along with the front body mounts to the front beam.

Thanks. Ordered me up a set of the caps.
Do you think you can still go with a slightly narrower tire? I probably won't drop mine three clicks (but that's yet to be seen). Even if I do the pie cut I probably won't drop it quite as low as yours but do it to help keep the front suspension in line.

You could prob do a short shock in the rear with two click and be just fine. I am a bit old and really want to have fun with this. As for the front tire you could go smaller. I would not go smaller than a 145. There is a ton of treads on that, you just need to figure out how nice you want it to ride. For me its about fender and tire gap. I hate the small tire and huge gap. There is a kid running 165/45 tire and has like a 8" gap in his fender well. LOL

Haha. Trust me, I'm 49 so I understand a bit old. I'd probably drop mine as low as yours if not for speed bumps in the parking ramp at work. Unless I could do a full bag setup there is no way I'll get over most of them at that height and even at two notches I might be pushing it.
What sizes front and rear are you running now? I was thinking it was your back tire you were having clearance issues with. I'd love to do like a 2" tranny raise as well but don't want to deal with the issues of customizing the engine tins to still seal, etc.
