1963 15 window deluxe restoration

Hi everybody,

in this thread I try to document the restauration of my 1963 15 window deluxe. There will also be many questions, maybe you can help me to find an answer... and maybe I can give back some information to this great forum.

Here we go:

First pictures at his new home:

The floor: Bad condition, but soon looking as new. Anyone who knows if the seat mountings on the floor are placed correctly for a 251 7 seat walkthrough? Are there any missing?

Are you keeping the paint or repainting it? what are the plans?

Hi Volker,
what a great bus. Turquoise, walkthrough and 15 Windows.
The pressings on your new floors looks right for a short middle seat.

@ blink: Yes, but nevertheless I sometimes fear the outstanding work. It`s going to be repainted completely. I`m still not sure about the color, I`d prefer mousegrey with a red plastic filler more than Turqoise or Red.

@ zehbeh: Thank you! Yes, it has the short middle seat. I`m not sure if there is still a lack of those flat metal pieces which cover the middle seat mounting areas. Greetings to Stuttart! Very Happy

And this is my next question: Does anybody know where to buy some repair metal for the rear part of the front wheel arches as shown on the picture? Should be for a Walkthrough...

Congrats on a super cool bus! Those inner wheel wells don't look too bad. It takes some time to cut out those sections and weld in new metal. Maybe poke a little with a screwdriver to see how thin the metal really is (or is not). You may also consider tackling the bigger jobs first and save the small time consuming (possible burn out jobs) for later.

Fwiw, this is what I did with mine but I had other bigger jobs around these areas so one thing led to another : ) I re-used/recycled good metal off my bus for small areas like this. I think it's 20 gauge sheet metal?

@ vwserphguy: Nice pictures! My wheel arches are bader than it might look. I finally found some repair metal sheet that was made for non-walk-through buses, but we`ll accommodate them.

@ zehbeh: Perfect! I knew one is missing. Now I ask myself why my floor did only come with two of those (instead of four as seen on wolfsburgwest). Must try to get one more...

The winter has gone, work goes on. Body work is finished and a friend of mine prepared the bus for final painting. And as you can guess - the bus will carry it´s original colors turquoise/bluewhite. Smile

The engine is running already, I had to replace the carburettor, the intake manifold and one cylinder head. Now it`s being disassembled and overhauled.

It's crazy how thin that paint was over the original turk. Seems like it wouldn't have taken much.

@ AS350driver: Hope I won`t get stuck with all that attachments. Rolling Eyes

BTW: AS350 refers to flying?

Volker, yes AS350 does refer to flying Smile

Or I could use EC120driver or a few other types, but I've been in Astars a lot here lately.
