The new gauges finally arrived...
And I finished making the dash plate (felt a little back country doing it myself with a shotty drill press, but it worked out in the end).
Burnt the midnight oil after work this last week cutting out the dash.
And finished putting everything in last night.
To compare, this was the original.
Loving the results!!! _________________ 1970 Joe Poty Sand Rover T Bug Pickup, 2095cc |

Thought I was done... But didn't like how the brass fuel gauge housing threw off the symmetry.
Pulled out the old assembly.
And had a new head machined to match the horn button.
Alright... Now I'm done... I think...

That turned out well. In hindsight I wish I had mounted all the gauges in a removable panel as you have. Easier to service wires and gauges if needs be. |

Nice, really nice....makes it look like a turn-key manufactured package for the kit. That to me is always the best goal. |

That's a fuel gauge? How does that work?

In your before picture it appears that the 4 mounting holes for the gauge panel are tapped. IN the finished picture, you used allen head screws to mount the gauge panel to the dash.
I have a question to you or to anyone that can answer it. How are the threads made in the fiberglass dash? Are they tapped directly into the fiberglass, are they nut inserts or are they made using heli-coils ? |

saw2 nailed it... washer and nut on the backside.
The fuel gauge is pretty neat... there is a cable attached to the float in the gas tank, as the float drops it pushes the cable out. The builder painted the cable green/yellow/red so you know where you are in the tank. It actually works awesome.
One thing I can't figure out is how he geared it... the float travel is ~16", and the cable travel is only ~1". _________________ 1970 Joe Poty Sand Rover T Bug Pickup, 2095cc |

Since my dash was really carved up and I was going to mount everything on a plate .... I cut away most of dash but leaving enough materials at "corners" so I could mark mount holes and drill and put "J-Nuts" on remaining fiberglass to capture screw threads holding plate... Did I mention I real hate trying to work behind dash..Like trying to put washers and nuts on mount screws
Here is mock up before paint and wire... Also leave enough wire on instruments you can pull plate out and lay in your lap to wire or work on...

For anyone interested in getting new gauges from Speedhut, gauges are on sale this weekend for 15% off. That gets a $385 speedo/gas gauge down to $327. _________________ -------------------------

Yeah, that's what I did when I got my gauges. I caught one of those sales. If you miss one just keep checking back now and then. Well worth the wait. |

Finally.... wired and working! Spent the last 3 evenings in this position for more hours than I'd like to admit (first time wiring anything).
All is well in the end... Gauges work and I think they look great.
