|
|
Hello all. I did do the "Search" function before posing this question on hitches. I have a '72 camper that I'd like to put a receiver on. I'm not worried much about the hitch as I'd like to mount a bike rack on the receiver. I saw a few mentions of hitches, but nothing really definitive on options or solutions. Would someone please point me in the direction of a solution or talk to me about "popular" answers to this dilemma?
I appreciate your responses, thanks. |

I can't find his ad now, but there is a guy who makes very nice aftermarket hitches. I just got one for the front of my '78 pickup, and would have you consider that option. The nice thing about putting it on the front, especially for a bike rack, is that it does not interfere with the engine door and rear hatch. _________________ John

Unfortunately, 72 hitches are a "one year only" item. They (Westfalia, Peka) are hard to find in North America and most of the hitch manufactures will make 68-71 and 73-79 hitches, but not 72 hitches.
If you just want to put a receiver on your bumper there should be more options available at most hitch shops. However, I am not sure that doing this would be safe? |

Thanks, JT and BD and 72vwtype2, for your quick responses. I did search through the classifieds for hitches and found nothing for me there. BD, thanks for the link, but those will not work for me. The site/shop owner stated that his receivers would not fit 1972 and earlier. I do appreciate the input, though.72vwtype2, I don't think a bumper mounted receiver would be safe either. Even for just a bike rack.
I did learn on here that the normal receiver is a one year only item. I'm wondering how people have adapted to this if they have at all. |

Thank you, BD. I just sent him an email explaining. We'll see where that goes. |

Keep us informed with his response, as I believe there is a significant demand for 72 hitches due to the lack of availability. |

I will, 72vwtype2.
I did just notice that Bus Depot (I hope I'm not violating any rules with posting the name) does sell a '72 set up. Not sure of its fitment, though. |

I have also been searching for a 72 hitch receiver. I had not noticed the Bus Depot hitch before, but it seems that it may only be a mount for the 2in ball and not a 2in hitch receiver. I have emailed them and will share their response.

Bus Depot replied and unfortunately the hitch they offer is not a hich receiver.

That sucks on the BD one.
I heard from Jeremy last week and he had someone lined up to let him use a '72 to mock up a set up for these, but he hasn't heard from that guy since they initially talked so, for now, that's out. |

Looks like a Just Kampers item.
One idea is to take that and modify it to add a receiver. _________________ John

my 72 came with a hitch when I first got it. It was home made out of .50 thick iron and welded to my crossbar. Ended up cutting it off like a dumba$$ and now regretting it. I did save the pieces though. _________________ 1969 Transporter

If you want to carry bikes, the fiamma "carry bike" is a lightweight option. Access to the engine too.
The Jaime rivers recievers are really nice too _________________ '77 Rivi 2.0 T2 GD

The Fiamma rack is super nice and well made but it does limit the access to the rear hatch. I think the hitch offers many options, it not just a bike rack. _________________ __________

Once the bikes are off the Carry Bike can remain on while opening the rear hatch, and the stock springs are strong enough to keep the hatch open even with the added weight. On the plus side, though, you can get to the engine compartment even with the bikes on, which could be useful in the event of an engine fire while on bike-related trips.
I have a receiver hitch from Jaime and it's great (mine's a '75), but I only use it to pull a trailer...though I have a receiver bike mount, several of my mountainbikes have frames without a standard crossbar (e.g. 1994 Cannondale Super V) and most of the receiver mount carriers primarily support the bike via the top tube. Plus, using this type of carrier would likely block both the rear hatch and engine compartment.
Just my $0.02 since I have the receiver hitch and the Carry Bike...

my setup:
there is not much room between the bumper and the body, so i will need to run a modified extension.
My plan was to use this for bike racks. |
