Here's where I put mine. Stole the speaker boxes from a stereo in the house. These are out of the way and don't hinder legs or knees. And they do the sound to my liking. I had thought about speaks in the door panels but no way are the new uninstalled panels going to get cut. And contrary to good advice, I keep thinking about 1 piece windows. Speaks would be in the way. We put Polly's in the kick panels right next to the headlight buckets.

I like my 6X9's in the door!
Sound good too!
maybe I'm just used to it.
Even better when I have the 2nd amp and box going in the back. Smile

that's what i had in mind - just like desertbusman. there were remnants of that in my 69, and it got me thinking that's the most logical thing, on earth.

Stevo- It's a good thing if you use wing nuts on the mountings for the one under the cluster so you can easily get it out of the way.. It's hard enough to get under there or at the fuses anyway.

absolutely,, add a parcel tray and you've got real loopiness during an emergency. good call. i've got one tray left side on the DC, and am hesitant as it is to add one to the sunroof for that reason alone. with speakers you pin yourself out a bit, so yah quick release turns the tide all the way. i believe this is the best spot for the sound quality/dry speaker/least hacked formula. advanced windshield rust notwithstanding.

heavens to betsy after seeing your example, it just looks best overall.

I know I may catch some flak for doing this. But anyhow this is what I did:

I took 6x9s and drilled holes in the top of my dash and mounted them lengthwise so that if I ever need a speaker replacement I can buy ordinary speakers.

I'll send a few pics when its light out.

So there is usually a single speaker mounted with the dash running left to right.

So I just got some tiny speakers and mounted them side by side oriented front to back on the dash. So if speakers ever need changed they are standard size.

If you remove this speakers you are left with 8 holes next to the speaker holes that are already on the dash. Lay people wouldn't notice but a vw enthusiast might notice the extra holes.

Will take a pic tomorrow and post. I used "finishing washers" and stove bolts from "lowe's". But of course it could be made to look a lot better by painting the stove bolts washers or switching them out to something more attractive.

To mount the speakers you hold the nut in your left hand under the dash and put the bolt in the top of the dash. Not hard really

And the sound acutally quite good. I hooked up to back speaikers behind the passenger and drivers side which are like stereo speakers that can be moved around. But if they are unplugged the front speakers are sufficient.

By the way. My stereo has 4 outputs 2 front 2 back. I hooked the front up to the mounted speakers and the 2 back I took 6x9s and mounted them in little homemade boxes with bike hooks on them. I put rca connectors on both.. When I go camping or to a festival those speakers can be taken outside or hung out on trees or whatever when you're camping.

My thoughts are, you can always mount a radio and just put rca jacks on it and hook up some speakers to it without modifying your vehicle at all.

Yes I drilled holes in my dash for 6x9s. Again, like I said I'll catch flack. But give me some grace and mercy:)
I'll send a few pics tomorrow after the sun comes up.

Fixed. Not as bad as I was expecting, could you use smaller headed screws (flat maybe) and then paint them black? You might never see them that way. Well, see them as much.

Wow. So much better than I thought it was gonna be.

Follow Kirks advice here. Black screws would go a long way.

Edit: You need a radio delete plate! Maybe a CHT gauge there.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/1368392.jpgI still feel like a hack, but a few years ago I cut holes and installed speakers in the dash plate.
Sounds greatand you barely see them. I'll probably do it again.

If you are going to cut speaker holes in the kick or door panels this inexpensive Circle cutter from HF makes it quick & easy.

I put in door panels 20 years ago never had a problem. Kick panels might be another good choice.

I'd never damage the dash to install them under there.

No pictures that I could find, but I put two 3.5" speakers in the dash. I cut a plywood frame that fit under the stock speaker area. I screwed the speakers to this frame. Prior owner(s) had enlarged 4 of the original speaker holes in the dash. They were just big enough to thread a small pan head screw through the hole and into the plywood frame. A touch of black paint on the screw heads and they barely showed. I also have a pair of 6.5" speakers in the kick panels. The sound is decent to my ears with a modest priced stereo.
