|
|
I've always loved racks. Beetle, Bus, Notch... they all elevated the car's cool factor for me! I started researching Thing racks and found the area to be a little thin for choice. I took the best and worst from what I could find, and came up with this guy. It's a beta version, so a little rough around the edges. Once I nail it down, I'm thinking of offering these up to the VW community. What do you guys think?

I like it a lot. How does it connect to Thing? _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

This is all I have at the moment. I'll take better pics of all the attachment points and post them later.

I may need one depending on price, and what the final version looks like. Very Cool. |

Some nEat ideas there! I like the extension tubes for the uprights! Great thinking.... Also, using existing mount points for the top pivots, is cool.
I will say, I think the basket lines are contrary to the Thing... The curved upper edge, and the opening being at the forward edge.. It just doesn't "flow" well...
I'd suggest to revers the basket, and use more angular lines on it...
Just my $.02... But honest as can be!
Either way, good on your for getting out there to fill s thin spot in the market! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

GI Joe...
Thanks for your insight! I agree that the lines are not optimal. I have a design change in mind... I can't reverse the direction of the basket without eliminating the tilt function all together, or using a compound hinge that would not look clean.
I'll play around with it this weekend and post the latest pics.
Thanks Everyone! _________________ Eric

I like it especially how you can still access the engine compartment. Great place for a space NATO fuel can |

Looks cool, and some cool engineering. I would echo that the bends be a bit more "squared" (without being actually squared), and the uprights a bit shorter (2"?) and more vertical. That said, it wont clear my rear spare mount, or I would definitely buy one. _________________ "I haven't seen one of those since I was shootin' at 'em!" |

Ahhhh,.... I see the intent with the rearward lines(tilt function, with full roof)..
Hmmm... That is a tricky spot. What about getting it high enough for the lid to open just over horizontal(or high as possible), and have an attachment point on the underside of he basket to "hang" the lid on? Just thinkin out loud!

While it's very cool, I can foresee problems with the sliding tube support system. Specifically, if there is nothing on the rack, it will have a tendency to bounce every time you hit a pot hole. There should probably be a through-hole and a pin on one side, or detent balls on both sides, to prevent the upward movement when it's not being folded. |
