|
|
Hope this is the right place for this. I picked up a 36 years ago and set it aside. I happened to be looking at it the other day and was wondering what year it is. The block number starts off with 218. It has a hand crank nut on the crank pulley. The crank is 8 dowled, but no flywheel. Is this a bus or a bug number? _________________ Jake |

With the first 3 numbers a 218, it would make it a late November or early December 1958 engine. It could have come from either a bug or a bus. If it has vacuum advance of the distributor, it would be correct for a bug. _________________ New Vintage Specialist.

Pulley nuts and distributors are easily and frequently switched out so its not possible to verify its original fitment. The later 36 hp engines did not have an identifier in the case number to tell you what it was originally installed in. Go to the technical tab above click on VIN#'s and you can look up the month and year of your engine but not whether it was bug or bus. You get to dress it up the way you want it. There are posts in this forum on what went with bus and bug for 36 hp engines. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Yes, didn't realize it had an 8 dowel till I got it home. Had the original muffler, but it was to far gone to save. Will probably work on it a bit more this weekend. _________________ Jake |

Here's a photo I got a while back of it. Bought it mainly because it was complete. _________________ Jake |

A couple of more questions. The bracket on the coil, is that for the air cleaner on a ghia or a bus? Also, are there numbers on the transmission too? I have a split case transaxle too. Complete from backing plate to backing plate.
Since we discovered it's a 58' motor, I will have this thread moved over to the 58-67 section. _________________ Jake |

8-dowel crankshaft + it has what looks like it could be the remains of a dual carb. kit... maybe it has some performance stuff in it?
Yes on the coil bracket - that is a bracket for a Bus/Ghia air cleaner.
Yes, on the transmission number, look on the side of the transmission near the nose cone.
It has a '55 only fuel pump on it too.
Nothing super special performance wise, just something I noticed since I have a '55.
It has a Bus-style distributor too (no vacuum advance).
This could mean it came out of a Bus or this could also mean someone installed that for performance reasons. _________________ How to Post Photos

or they just didn't want to deal with running vacuum lines for the dual carbs _________________ Ruby red 1967 beetle sedan with a 2021cc
