I picked up some CLR to clean the rust (recomm. by skim), some brown Rustoleum rusty metal primer spray and some brown duct tape today. That should take care of the roof holes for now.

I'm planning to see if I can get the motor running tonight.

usually lots o' nastiness hiding in the front nose under the headlight buckets. I find a combination of compressed air to loosen the crap up and then a strong shop vac with a long hose (while doning the respirator) works well- ditto too for a magnet- you never know what is hiding down there

best find for me in a bus was a full box of live 9mm ammo behind the passenger door panel oye!

50mph was about my max. going home. The bus was very easy to get squirly and start fishing around with the relatively small Passat pulling it. I had to drive like I was in the bus to 'catch' it when it would start bouncing around. Fortunately it never really felt out of control and I got the hang of it eventually.

Are you going to do that BSVWOC cruise on Sat. April 30th, down here in Mass?

Stan,

How did your end up towing it home? ie, trailer, dolly etc? The reason I ask is I am thinking of bringing my Kombi with me up to Cape Cod this summer. I need to bring my pickup anyway, so why not tow the kombi along?

I used my bus towbar with my '95 Passat wagon (VR6). It was easy to get the bus bouncing and swaying though if I wasn't careful. Next time I would try flat towing a bus with my wife's Plymouth minvan (long wheelbase). I think it would be more stable than the relatively small Passat. It also probably didn't help to have a mismatch of old radials and bias-ply tires on the bus, and worn out rear shocks in the wagon.

When are you going to be on the Cape? We go to Truru (Cape Cod)(www.capecodcamping.com) every August. I'm looking forward to rattling the chains of every Yankee fan I see there this summer. And let me tell you, there are a lot of them on the Cape in August.

Stan,

We go the second two weeks of July. We rent a house just south of Truro in North Eastham. I know the campground you stay at.

The VW bus was just made for the Cape.

BTW what gives with all those Yankee fans??????? Give them hell.

Mike

We (myself and Jim Phillips) got the motor running Wed. night. I was very stoked! Original running 40 horse. Now I need to get a battery, install the new muffler, and slap a plate on so I can give it a spin around the block Laughing I can't wait to see what the neighbors think of the '61 Fossil Mango.

I'm using a separate fuel supply (fresh gas in a plastic gas 'can') and we had to "spritz" the carb a bit with some fuel to get it to fire up. We also used a 12V battery and a 12V coil. I'm planning to stick with 6V for now and maybe even run some bias-plys for that true vintage experience.

I also had the perfect emblem for the front of the bus, full-patina!

Bias-plys rule and rarely dry crack and the ride is smooth, plus they slid on corners so you dont roll.
Radials are for wimps!
