While it's very cool, I can foresee problems with the sliding tube support system. Specifically, if there is nothing on the rack, it will have a tendency to bounce every time you hit a pot hole. There should probably be a through-hole and a pin on one side, or detent balls on both sides, to prevent the upward movement when it's not being folded.

Absolutely right, Craig! I have the pins and cotter pins ready to go. I wanted to make sure the tilt and level positions were optimal before placing the pins. Thanks for the feedback!

Ahhhh,.... I see the intent with the rearward lines(tilt function, with full roof)..

Hmmm... That is a tricky spot. What about getting it high enough for the lid to open just over horizontal(or high as possible), and have an attachment point on the underside of he basket to "hang" the lid on? Just thinkin out loud! Wink

Thanks for your insight! I agree that the lines are not optimal. I have a design change in mind... I can't reverse the direction of the basket without eliminating the tilt function all together, or using a compound hinge that would not look clean.
I'll play around with it this weekend and post the latest pics.

Thanks Everyone!

I could raise the basket, but that would increase the hinge length. Long hinges mean weak points. As is sits, it held my weight last night (190lb) for two beers... My stopwatch. I'd prefer to keep the fulcrum short, thereby stronger.

Good ideas as usual, GI Joe. Thanks

I've made some adjustments, and will post pics soon.

I like your design very much; no holes to drill is a big plus for me. When you go to production please let me know and I would seriously consider buying one of your units. Wood slats would be nice for that old school look. The open front is more accommodating and one could just use bungee cords or leather straps to hold items in. Cool

Made some changes... The shape is more aligned with the angular profile of the car. Also, I carried 100lbs on it to a show a couple days ago. It performed quite well; no detectable deformation/cracks, etc...

Inputs?

Uncle Sam is moving me to Wichita in the next few weeks. Once I get settled in, I hope to start producing these for interested parties.

Thanks!

Honestly... No. I'd like to make another one, or two before coming up with a price.

Honestly, I dont know when I'll be able to make any more of them. My new job takes all of my time. Maybe I'll be in a better position to knock a few out around spring...?
I can say that I have tested the poop out of it! It has hauled scooters, coolers, firewood... A lot! The legs are holding up great. The hinges are still solid.

Ya know .... if you drew up some plans along with a parts list some people who can weld but want to save the time doing trial and error fabrication might be interested in purchasing said plans. Wink
Glad to hear it is working out well for you.
Keep us posted if you do decide to start making them. Mahalo!
