I detailed the cab.
The heater tube is original paint, and you can see the red oxide primer.
The floor and inside of nose is re-spray by Josh.
1st pic of air vent was before detailing, 2nd pic after I had done half. The edge closer to the camera is cleaner. I did the whole cab. It may have taken a whole day. or more.
I left the key rust shadow on the dash tray.
dust in original paint on dash to right of speedo pod.
light covering of original paint over driver's door, particularly above where coat hook is:

seat stand detail
I cleaned it with 0000 steel wool and water, then buffing compound, then waxed it
Whoever said keeping og paint is because you are lazy has never done this.
loaded the area under the seat up:
The passenger side was nicer. I used a lot of 3M Finesseit:

Cab roof panel install:
use soap you dirty hippies!
slide the panel forward in the slots:
see the insulation above the panel?
Watch out so the panel goes into the front slot, instead of jamming up against it
when it is too snug to push by hand, tap with block of wood and mallet:
There are *two* versions of the 55-61 cab roof panel. I installed the looser version, so it is a bit gappy there.
This 58 bus with og cab roof panels has the same pattern of cab roof panel
It took longer to write this than to install the cab roof panels. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Bows
This is what separates the goats form the sheep. The subhatch is awesome. However, the wood rots, and has issues. Here instead of replacing the entire area around the subhatch, I chose to only replace part.
In the future, I would just replace all the wood around the subhatch.
This bus was odd in that the bows had a horizontal keyway. Normal is a vertical keyway. Vertical is better.
I replaced the left half of the #1 bow, and nailed it to the og right half, with og nails. This bow was also cut wide back at Westfalia, then notched after they realized it stuck out into the subhatch area. I spent more time to do it this messed up way instead of using my normal patterns. I think this was a real early subhatch bus, and they were still figuring it out. The bow patterns were all different from later 50s subhatch bus bows. I copied the rotten og ones to the bus.
The marks on the right bow are where I glued up the nail holes from the trim and screw holes from the seam trim.
I think the bows were originally white Limba. I used luan which is a different species of mahogany. It is more red rather than gold. Same grain pattern.
Where #2 goes:
I whittled a patch for the #2 bow, and glued and nailed #2 back together:
I drilled and fit the hinge. The pin fits nice and snug, not sloppy:
I had made new pieces for next to the subhatch. The one with the hinge holes was rotten, the one the catches screwed to the screws were pulling out.
Clamped the straight pieces to the roof, drilled pilot holes, tapped the new nails in:

straight bow near door at #2 was straightforward:
Attaching the straight bow next to the hinge pin was a bit tricky, especially with the old wood. It would have been easier if I just replaced #2 bow completely.
old straight bow by hinge pins:
pretty tight:
must have angle juuuust right
in the right place
straight bow didn't line up perfect vertically, but good enough for Westfalia
here it was before. You can see it does not line up at the bottom of the bow pieces:
inner straight bow at #1 bow:
whew! That felt good to have that done _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/

Installed the 4th / outer screw for cab roof panels after installing the shoehorns... the strips at the lower edge of the roof.
#3 bow was fine to re-use. They usually are. It has the odd horizontal keyway.
restored roof panel in:
used this to caulk the roof trim:
Greg squashed the aluminium trim in place carefully and firmly with the Knipex pliers and a piece of wood cushioning the jaw of the tool, while I tapped each nail in holding the trim through the roof panel into the bow:
holy smokes, it's installed:

Well, there are thread updates, then there are thread updates!
This is clearly the latter. I love how sympathetic you are with this rare camper. Well done Clara- I guess Greg gets a nod too. _________________

I don't think we installed the support for the jumpseat. Something to do with broken bolt and bad drill bit.

subhatch:
I used original screw placement, and it took HOURS to install that panel.
After getting the Bulli Brigade and comparing subhatch screw placement I was glad I did. AFACT, there were two versions of subhatch screw placement.
There was a problem with installing the sub hatch. Seemed like the hinges were too short. The original ones to the bus had broken, so we got some off another bus. They worked fine until the new bows were installed.
Old bows had a bit of a gap, at the front hinge. The bow was entirely rotted away at the front hinge, actually, and that is how we had driven this bus around for 25000 miles. It was harder to see with the metal trim around the roof, but the hatch wiggled up down so it was clear there were issues.:
So the bottom line is we removed the seals around the hatch, just put in enough to not smash metal against metal, and called it good enough to drive to Florida. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

By this time the ETD to leave for Bulli Brigade was rapidly approaching. And passed. John invoked the 45 minute rule, jumped in his swivel seat sunroof kombi, and headed south.
I did not take as many pics as I meant to of the process. Honestly, we used some NOS bits on the bus, like gas door seal, pop out window seal, I did not even document. I really like real VW pop out window seals. But time was short, the pressure was on.
Greg did a quick spit and polish on the roof rack, we popped the motor in, threw the gear in the bus and drove south en route to Florida, with no time for relaxing. Just drive 1000 miles. Ya, we saved the original paint rear bumper for a patina bus and painted an NOS bumper.
We stopped for the night at Lufteknic:
I could look back and see this:
All bright eyed and bushy tailed when we got to Florida:
Didn't make it to Tampa that night, camped out and got there the next morning.
In the condo parking lot:
