What kind of paint did you use from the LPS. .?
That seems to be my biggest downfall is the final paint. I can fabricate, prep, sandblast, but when it comes to final shooting, can't seem to pick the correct topcoat.

You had a thread about the registration. I got the donor registered before I tore it apart. So it's a 69' vw. If I ever finish I'll see about going to a special construction. So just take your numbers and weld it to the pan and don't worry too much till it's a running down the road.

I'm pretty sure is was Dupli-Color Cast Iron Gray Engine Enamel and Dupli-Color Clear Engine Enamel to shine it up. We just followed the directions. As with everything prep is key. I cleaned everything up with a wire wheel, sprayed it down with brake cleaner because we didn't have any paint thinner handy, handled with paper towels from then on, suspended at a good height and then painted from 1 direction, waited, painted from another direction, waited, painted a little heavier all over, waited and then repeated with the clear. The clear says to apply with in 1 hour of the paint. The we went to have lunch and when we came back we put them in the sun to finish "baking". They came out pretty good and I'm happy for something that will most likely be overlooked.

I'm pretty sure that I'm just going to bite the bullet and move forward with the Homebuilt Special Registration Kit Car thing. My 72 donor chassis with title will be going up for sale soon.

Independence Day Weekend Progress: Steering Box refurbification Laughing

I took the steering box apart and cleaned all the old grease/grime out. While apart, I figured it would be a good time for some beautification as well. Honestly, that was always the plan LOL. I wire wheeled everything I could and repainted. I only cleared the bolts so there would be some contrast.

Once I get some John Deere Cornhead Grease (yes it's a real thing LOL) I will clean up the inside edges of any overspray and get it buttoned up. I also repainted the Tie-Rods. I already have new Tie-Rod ends and my new ball joints should be in this week. I'm hopeful the front end will be assembled this weekend, but with a car show/drag night happening it seems a little unlikely. It's all good though and should be another great event.

Progress for this week…I blew off a car show so I could work on my front beam assembly, that and it was literally 100º with no wind and it sounded like a better idea to be in a shaded garage. I saw pictures and it looked like everyone had a great time and there were lots of nice rides.

Airkewld Front Beam is still sexy, but like any fine lady can be a little temperamental! LOL As I started installing the torsion leaves and thinking this through (probably the bulk of my problem) it appears that I’m only getting lift out of the beam instead of a drop. With my drop spindles, that isn’t really a problem though so it seems like everything is going to work out in that regard. It has me scratching my head a little, but if nothing else will help me out on the beach!

With Brian’s help (Thanks Boo!) we were able to test fit the beam into place and it literally fits like a glove! It’s like the David Barrett Chassis was made around this beam. Now this is only a test fit and things still need to be greased and the control arms touched up from pressing in the ball joints, but so far so good! Enough yappin, and I’m surprised if you’re still reading this LOL

I’m not so sure about the body lift anymore after looking at where its sits now. I think I’m going to drop the floor pans under the seats a little instead because there is already more wheel well gap than I was wanting. With a body lift, the chassis would be dragging the ground to take up enough wheel well gap space. As it is, I may just need to step up the front tire size a little. But that’s so far down the road and still need to see what it looks like settled with a full tank of fuel. As it sits, the front beam is just over 6.5” off the ground if I remember correctly but that value is subject to change.

This is likely the stopping point for any major construction for a while until I 100% decide what rear torsion I’m using and get the SubaruGears engine/transmission mounts in my hands. This will buy me enough time to think it through and change my mind 14,000 times only to probably do what I was going to in the first place. A budget has a funny way of doing that LOL

So it was brought to my attention (Mr Pepper Wink

) that I should really update my thread even if just a little. Well sadly there's not a lot of actual buggy progress so much as buggy part progress.
I've ordered the SubaruGears Reverse Ring and Pinion Kit, and begun the install.
For the most part that's about it, but look for updates in the summer. There will be a burst at that point, not completion but progress for sure.

The rear covers are just basically sitting on the shell and will get some extra foam and attention.

Who's gonna finish your roll cage & what are you doing (powder/paint/chrome)? Also, offer still stands for me/Bill/Bob/etc to roll the 45 minute drive to Cola and help with assembly...and swill a few 🍻🍻👍🏻.
