The controls on the fridge are not intuitive so it's not a surprise that they're perplexing. I've used a sharpy to mark correct positioning of the gas valve to remind me.
The sight glass is in the lower left corner inside the fridge although I rely entirely on the green LED which isn't particularly easy to see either.
The fins will collect condensation and ice up. This and a thermometer tell me that it's working.
I believe all this is typical.
I still refer to the owners manual on occasion. _________________ - Jim

Lower left LED light (green) will light up when pilot is on. VW made this modification late 90,s to 91. |

And where exactly is the sight glass? In the fridge itself (that black hole bottom left that looks like a drain) |
Yes. Under the right conditions, you can see a blue glow:
I only rely on the LED in the panel, mostly because when I switch over to propane the fridge is full of stuff (and it's easier to see).

It should. In fact, I think all full-campers light the LED if working correctly. _________________ ~Kamz

Yes, the perplexing part of the system is that "1", indicating ON for the gas control knob is at the top - HIDDEN by the cabinetry! Only after removing the cabinet face did I discover this. _________________ '88 VW Westfalia
