|
|
Hi all -
I am trying to pull the trans from a 1977 beetle and on the drive shaft there are few bolts that look like they would fit a star key but there are many more notches in it than a star.
Does anyone know where i could get the bit to remove these? The bit i was given was too weak and when i tried to unscrew them the bit actually twisted because they are in so tight. Sorry for the lack of details i have pics of the bolt and bit i can upload if needed. |

These bits are available on line from the better VW suppliers...I had to buy one for my Bus and it's the same one use for the Beetle...can't recall where I got it from, but look carefully...you'll find it for about $7.00...do not use an Allen key to remove the bolts...only the Star bit will loosen them without damage. |

it is a 8mm, 12 Point (Triple Square) Bit and can be found several places, also sometimes refered to as a IRS CV JOINT 8MM 12 POINT SOCKET TOOL or 12 Point Velocity Joint Tool _________________ ____________

You'll need to clean out the triple-square recesses real well, and BE SURE to hold the tool in-line with the bolts. Or you'll be sorry !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. No guarantee that MAC tool shown is Made in America.
MAC tools are made from Globally Sourced components, with some assembly being performed in America. More MAC tools are being made in Taiwan these days (thanks, Stanley!)

I actually got to the bottom of this issue with a customer service rep. one time. as it turns out the only tools that are not US made are there precision torque line of tools, and she actually said that you have a better chance of hitting US made tools then non USA made tools buying tools. I do buy mac tools and they are all US made I steer clear of that line of Mac though. the main indicator she said is price, if the price is just alittle too good its Asiatic. lol |
